My husband and I are traveling throughout Germany at the end of September. We will be in Germany for 15+ days and decided to purchase the 15 consecutive day German rail pass. We will be visiting Munich and are planning on doing a day trip to Neuschwanstein . Is it still worth it for us to purchase the Bayern-Ticket or will our German rail pass cover our travels? Open to any suggestions! Thanks!
If you have a consecutive day GRP that incudes the date of your travel to Neuschwanstein, it will cover your travel. No need to purchase a Bayern Ticket.
But I don't believe it covers the bus up to the castle and back, but it shouldn't be much. Usually you can pay the driver.
Sam's right about the bus. Unlike the GRP, the Bayern-Ticket does cover the bus from Füssen Bahnhof to Hohenschwangau, but the cost of the roundtrip bus for two (probably 8,80€ or 2,20€/pP each way) is nowhere near the 31€ cost of the Bayern-Ticket.
The GRP covers all trains of the Bahn, including the S-Bahn, but not any U-Bahn, trams, or local buses (it does include the IC bus like the one to Prague); the Bayern-Ticket covers only regional trains in Bavaria, but also RVO buses, like the one from Füssen Bahnhof to Hohenschwangau;
The bus "up to the castle and back" (actually up to Mary's Bridge) would not be included with either the GRP or the Bayern-Ticket.
If Munich is a the start of end of the trip and outside the 15-consecutive-day validity of the pass, then that would obviously be an occasion to use the Bayern Ticket, instead.
