German itinerary to Amsterdam to meet Baltic cruise

Hi, my sister and I are planning a land trip in Germany to eventually end up in Amsterdam to meet a ship sailing for the Baltic region. We will need a couple of days to explore Amsterdam before boarding. This will leave us 16 or 17 days to make our way there. Missed Budapest last trip and are tempted to start there, although seems out of the way. We like a mixture of larger cities and cute small towns. Not interested in Frankfurt. want to spend at least 4 nights in Berlin. Would like to include Munich, stay in ? Fussen and also include Bamberg. Please make other suggestions that may suit. Would like to visit Nueschwanstein castle. We will not do any less than 2 night stays. Thanks so much

We absolutely love Budapest. You can easily go to Bratislava, Vienna, Prague, Dresden and Berlin in a straight line on the train. All these cities have very picturesque towns close by for day trips.

An alternative would be Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and then go up the Rhine River to Bacharach, Koblenz and Cologne. We made this trip by car twice.

I've been to Fuessen-Neuschwanstein, and we prefer to spend our time a little farther south in the Austrian Alps-Tirol.

Hi,

For the other suggestion category: you could start in Budapest even if it is out of the way. For both cities and smaller places I suggest Budapest , Vienna, Meißen, Weimar, and Berlin. You have several choices in mind and need to choose which to drop.

We just did 4 nites in Vienna train to Budapest for 3 nites flew to Berlin 4 nites then flew to Amsterdam 3 nites.
Could do same starting in Munich.

To include Bamberg might consider flight into Budapest- then head to Munich, Fussen, Bamberg, Berlin- by train.
We chose to fly due to time contraints.

I'd try to give Budapest 4 nights if you can.
