I was in the Army in the early to mid 1970's in what was then West Germany. I want to return and see the Inter-Border Zone now that the Wall is down. I understand several museums and refurbished areas of the old border still exist. Can anyony advise me as to where these places are?
You can find an almost complete list - ordered from north to south - here. The Grenzlandmuseum Eichsfeld has a 6km long footpath with in-depth descriptions of the border barriers.
"Little Berlin" near Hof in Mödlareuth, Oberfranken.

Nothing to do with the old East border, but Colburg and Kronach with their Fortresses, Kulmbach with the castle and breweries and Sonnenberg that was in the old East but now an "Artsy" town are all in this area. You could fill a whole day while in the region.
You might want to plan a visit to Point Alpha by the Fulda Gap. This is fairly close to Frankfurt if you are looking for the closest city to fly into or to overnight in.

There is now a cycle route that follows the line of the iron curtain from the Baltic to the Black sea. It takes in a variety of iron curtain museums, watch towers, etc.
