One of the things I wanted to do while I am in Berlin the first week of October is to visit the German History Museum. It looks like the main permanent exhibition which I believe is the span of German history will be closed while I’m there. Is that correct? I’m trying to figure out what in the permanent exhibition I’ll be able to see. Could somebody help me with that? Thank you.

Since that is now off your itinerary, this isn't a replacement by any means but I sure enjoy the exhibition and you may want to consider a visit:

The second link you shared was the one I had read and I appreciate your also sharing the Visit Berlin link, periscope. So it sounds like the entire permanent exhibition survey will be closed in early October and in fact closed until at least 2025. This is disappointing because that was a highlight of my visit to Berlin.

As you can see in periscope's comment, the Zeughaus and permanent exhibit has been closed for awhile (it was closed when I was there in April). But you can still see some temporary exhibits at the Pei building.
