German Historical Museum in Berlin closes main building until 2025

The German Historical Museum (DHM) in Berlin will close its central exhibition building, the Zeughaus Unter den Linden, for renovation and redesign probably from mid 2021 to the end of 2025.

During this time, the neighboring Pei-Bau will remain open with temporary exhibitions and a specially designed exhibition on German history, the DHM announced on September 3, 2020.

Above all, a comprehensive renovation of the air conditioning system is necessary. Parts of the system are no longer up to date or have reached the end of their service life. The dismantling of the permanent exhibition and the securing of the objects should begin in mid 2021. The work under the leadership of the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning is then to be carried out from January 2022 to December 2023. The German Historical Museum is planning twelve months for the construction of the new permanent exhibition. The museum store and the café in the Zeughaus as well as the Zeughaus cinema will remain closed during this time.

In the building designed by architect I. M. Pei, temporary exhibitions are planned in the extension designed by the architect I. M. Pei. The opening will be devoted to "The Political History of the documenta" (June 18, 2021 to January 9, 2022). Another exhibition will focus on the continued work of National Socialist artists in the post-war decades of the Federal Republic of Germany (August 27, 2021 to February 6, 2022).

Rats. That museum is by several leagues the most important sight I didn't have time to see during my 2015 trip. It was at the top of my list for a return visit. I guess I won't be rushing back to Berlin to see it (unless something magic happens on the vaccine front and I can get there before the closure).

Thanks for letting us know, Mark.

I know it is not a replacement for a museum but I like to recommend Berlin History App which is a really nerdy but professional and fascinating project in close collaboration with DHM and other official institutions. In my eyes a free must-have for all history loving visitors.

Enjoy.

I saw it in my only visit, so far, to Berlin in 2015. Fascinating and very well organized, I could have spent days there. My intention is to see Berlin again on another trip and I would definitely go back.
