German Folk Dance Program

Is there a place in Germany other than Hofbrauhaus that has a German folk dance program? We'll be in Munich during Oktoberfest, Sept. 28th-30th, but we're not planning on going to the tents. We're not into drinking and large crowds. We're concerned Hofbrauhaus will be too packed to get a seat for the program. We'd like a backup plan. My husband participated in German club, which included performing the dances at competitions. We'd love to see a performance anytime while in Germany. We are going to Dusseldorf, Bacharach, Cochem, Trier, Freiburg, Munich, Rothenburg, Berlin, and Frankfurt.

From my perspective there is no "German" folk dance. So, there is no dance that you will find all Germans standing / dancing behind - except celebrating a soccer game :-)

Folk dances are very regional, sometimes local - often also season specific. It has also a lot to do with cultures which you do not find on a map such as Fanconian or Sorbian.

Can give no recommendations but for own search the German word is "Volkstanz". Maybe interesting for your husband is this old book with low German folk dances including old b&w pictures (pages 204ff).

The largest culture and folk dance festival in Germany but more multi-culture than only Germans I am aware of is Carnival of Cultures around end of May in Berlin. But be aware as a tourist that this is not a humba-humba-festival which is by the way not German anyway.
