We will be traveling to Strasbourg France in November. Should I be concerned about crossing the borders into Germany from the Strasbourg area? We will be renting a car and doing two day trips from Strasbourg. Thanks
I really don't think you will have any problems.
In May we visited Colmar from Germany. Though we crossed between countries there is no actual 'border crossing'. They are in the EU. We weren't even aware we had crossed from one country to another until we saw the signs in the other language.
The border crossing problems seem to be on the eastern border of Germany, especially around Salzburg, Austria, where refugees are trying to get into Germany.
I never really heard how they are enforcing border controls, but based on past experience, they will definitely check trains, it used to be done by agents getting on the train at the last stop in say Austria, then having passports checked and things sorted out before the first stop in Germany. Roads?, who knows, maybe spot checks on major roads, I doubt they will try to seal every small road.
Don't be surprised to see police board the trains looking for migrants, stow aways, whatever. That was what I saw in June
The train from Salzburg Hbf to Freilassing takes only 6 to 12 minutes, not long enough to check tickets, let alone passports. That's why the trains are not running from Salzburg Hbf to Freilassing.

I was in Italy and Austria a few weeks ago, and the Police were definitely checking trains. However they didn't look twice at me as I suspect I didn't fit "the profile" of a refugee. However it's prudent to keep your Passport readily available in case they do check.
The border between Salzburg and Germany on the highway is being monitored by the German police, today it took three hours to go 8 kilometers to get into Germany.

No, there are generally no controls at the border in Strasbourg/Kehl. Only when there is a major event with high ranking politicians in the European Parliament or the Council of Europe the security measures are tightened including border controls. Currently there were some additional (randomly) controls due to the refugee crisis and maybe you'll have to wait a couple of minutes and show your ID/passport when you are crossing the border.
