German/Austria border

Hi,
We are staying in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for a few days next summer. We will be driving to Neuschwanstein castle and one of the routes will take us through Austria. Anyone familiar with that route and know any good places to stop along the way to sight see or have lunch? We will be traveling with 2 adults and 2 kids - ages 7 and 11. Any recommendations are appreciated and this might be our only stop in Austria. Thank you in advance for any help on this!

Since the route from Garmisch to Fuessen does not involve any motorways, it is only secondary roads and a vignette is not necessary. Ehrwald is on the way, a pretty town on the other side of the Zugspitze.

I'd take this route: 1. Garmisch - Ettal; stop for the beautiful baroque monastery. 2. Ettal - Linderhof: drive through the lovely Graswang Valley to Linderhof, the earliest of the castles of Ludwig II. If you are short in time you can limit your visit to the beautiful park. 3. Linderhof - Füssen (nice route through Tyrol along the Plansee lake; Füssen is nicely situated, late Gothic castle). 4. Füssen - Hohenschwangau / Neuschwanstein. Drive back via Steingaden (Wieskirche) and Oberammergau or via Reutte. No Austrian vignette necessary on that route.

Thanks for the clarification Sam.

"Thank you. Do you have any other tips besides about the vignette?"

It's only about 30 minutes max that you'll be in Austria. If you travel via Ettal, the Plansee and Reutte, you'll have some nice scenery and a chance to visit the Ettal Abbey.

Sla019 has some good suggestions. Best to get an early start if you decide on catching Ettal and Linderhof on the way (we spent a whole day between the two the last time we were in the area, including a long lunch in Ettal). You also have to take into account your appointed time for Neuschwanstein. I like the interior of Hohenschwangau, excellent ghoulash soup at Hotel Muller.

The Plansee route will take 90 minutes or so, non-stop.
