GERD diet - Best of Germany tour

We are registered for the Best of Germany tour in May 2023. How difficult will it be to adhere fairly closely to a GERD diet?

Hi!
I think it would help us answer if you tell us what foods you must avoid, as I am not sure everyone is aware of the restrictions of a GERD-friendly diet.
I am not fully aware myself, to be honest. I guess you have to avoid tomato (easy), onion (zwiebel(n), not easy to avoid, you might have to ask), sausages and bacon (they're served everywhere but alternatives are always available)... am I right? What else?

There can be different triggers for people who have GERD. tfscms, which specific foods do you need to avoid?

We already decided to have our large meal at lunch, and eat sparingly at dinner. It's not as if Rick's tours give you a plate of pre-chosen food and you have to eat it or starve.

The problem, if it exists, is leaving food on your plate that you know you should not eat. You can be sure the restaurants will bring you something else if a particular item is a problem for you. But you cannot expect to order a completely "off the menu" meal to your needs, even when you are eating retail, not on a tour.

Can you expect decaffeinated brewed coffee at dinner, and non-dairy milk product for it? Actually, Nescafe powder has been disappointingly de-rigeur in Europe for 25 years or more. And there are more dairy sensitivities over there than their actually are here. But you're not at home. Do you know that black and green tea both can cause reflux? That Advil can? It's not always the restaurant's fault.

I've learned on cruises that people my age start to order "hot water" in a teacup after dinner, to be sociable at the table. Roll with the punches.

I don't know what a GERD diet is. If you can clarify, it will be helpful. I have diet restrictions due to digestive issues and food allergies. When you registered for the tour, you were asked for diet restrictions. That can be edited if you need to. Talk to you guide. During the 2019 South of Italy tour, our guide was helpful, working around everyone's food restrictions.

I leave in 2 1/2 weeks for South of France tour and beyond. My food expectations are the tour will try to accommodate me as much as possible but the end responsibility is mine and to not make a fuss about it. There is always something to eat/drink. No one will go hungry.

Since you are going on the Germany tour, learn how to say in German "I am allergic to ...." and "I cannot eat ....". I have those phrases written in French to help me order food.

Have a great trip!

I’m mainly concerned about how easy it wii be to avoid fatty and fried foods. I will take decaf tea bags with me, and think the other problem foods for me (e.g., tomatoes, citrus, gas-producing veg) will be easier to avoid. Thanks for your advice!

Its part of the SOP for the tour leader to ask about food restrictions in the first orientation meeting. It would be helpful to prepare a list to give to her so she can consult it when calling the restaurant ahead of time. They often call the next restaurant while you're still on the coach, to tell them how many vegan meals, gluten-free, etc., and hear what the menu will be But it would also be helpful if you were ready to give examples of some German foods that you could eat, so as to offer suggestions.
