Which area would be the best for experiencing the Black Forest. We would like to walk/hike in the Black Forest, see the beautiful countryside, and maybe see some cuckoo clocks.
I don't about the other two towns but we stayed in Gengenbach for 5 nights and loved it. I don't think hiking in the immediate area but we loved walking around the little town. Our inn was Gasthof Hirsch, a quaint older B&B with creaky stairs and 3 flights upstairs to our attic room. We got a Konus card that lets us travel for free within the BF on the local train to different towns. One day to Trier (cuckoo clock heaven and wonderful hiking to the waterfall), one day to Strasbourg, France, and another day I-don't-remember.. maybe Colmar? Another day we used our car and drove to see the Vogtsbauernhof museum, and outdoor museum of farmhouses dating back to the 1500's.
I'll try to help, my wife and I like a good walk ourselves. Yes, Gengenbach is a beautiful town though we have not hiked in the immediate area. Durnbach is a pleasant enough, main street type of village, surrounded by lovely vineyards - the only walk we took was up to the Staufenberg winery. I have no knowledge of Feldberg.
Most of our hiking was in the southern part of BF, around Staufen (gorgeous), Schluchsee ( a long, fairly easy walk), and the Wutach Gorge near Loffingen, another great spot.
I believe Alexandra was referring to Triberg in her post, not Trier. The waterfall is a pleasant enough hike but the town itself is characterless compared to some other BF villages.
OOPS yes it was Triberg! Trier was a different trip.
We actually enjoyed Triberg and the hike to the waterfall and if cuckoo clocks are on the list of 'things to see' then Triberg is great; better prices on clocks here than in other towns.
Our favorite thing to do is drive around until we see a town that looks interesting. We found one in Schilltach, parked the car and wandered through the tiny old town, stopping for cake and coffee in a cafe at the town square.
We could have stayed much longer than our 5 days in the BF.
