Hello ,
I will travel to Black Forest side next week with my brother. We will be coming from Cologne. As highly recomnended, we will stay in Gengenbach for about 4-5 days. Next, we did not plan yet but i will stay in Staufen or Colmar to stay 3-4 days also.
Could you make comments for itinerary please? When gengenbach, i am planning to day trips to Schiltach, Baden-Baden, Colmar(strasbourg), Freiburg. ( Is it possible to make Freiburg, Staufen and Munster in 1 day?)
By the way, we dont have a car. We will use public transport. Do you recommend any other cute villages/towns worth to see. Triberg for falls worth? Calw, Vilingen...?
For booking, i cant see many choices. Is there any website to find accomodation in that area except for booking?
I appreciate your comments...
Thanks
Triberg is a good place to visit.
The Voghtsbauernhof open air museum and nearby alpine coaster ( sommerrodelbahn) in Gutach are fun
If you stay in Gengenbach, you receive a free KONUS card from your hotel that entitles you to free public transportation through most of the Black Forest. You can that for some of your day trips (except for Freiburg).
The town quite a few very nice restaurants. I had some excellent meals while staying there.
I stayed at the Stadthotel Pfeffermühle, which was excellent and reasonably priced (good breakfast, too!) and a quick 10 minute walk from the train station. https://pfeffermuehle-gengenbach.de/#
As stephen mentioned, don't miss out on a visit to the Vogtsbauernhof museum (open air museum) in Gutach. It is an open air tour of historic farms showing how people lived and worked in the Black Forest up to 600 years ago. It really is a must-see. It is located in Gutach. https://www.vogtsbauernhof.de/en
Edit to add: I just saw your question about making Freiburg, Staufen and Münster in one day. No, Münster is up in North Rhine-Westphalia, and quite a distance away. Freiburg im Breisgau and Staufen im Breisgau are fairly close to each other, but you would probably have to take a bus to Staufen.
Also, the link stephen gave you does not work, but this one should, and will have hotels available. https://www.gengenbach.info/uebernachten
I also use Google to find hotels. Here is a link and that way you can see reviews: https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotels/@48.4047486,8.0112645,16z?entry=ttu
the bus from Freiburg i B to Staufen takes about an hour.
Train with a quick connection in Bad Krozingen takes only 30 minutes. Cute little train. Easy.
Thank you very much for your valuable comments ...If you don't mind, I can come with other questions when I arrive there:)
Mardee, I wanted to say Munstertal... It is a different place?
Thanks again,
Münstertal is only a few kilometers away from Staufen and is visited for its historic silver mine, among other things. It has nothing to do with the city of Münster, and probably hardly anyone there knows about the existence of Münsteral ;)
While in Schiltach, we enjoyed the free Schuettesaegemuseum. The town itself doesn’t take long to see, but good for an hour or so. Add an hour if visiting the museum. If you take the Merkur Funicular Railway up the hill in Baden-Baden, it was cash only when we visited last year. In Staufen im Breisgau we enjoyed walking up to the castle. We had a rental car.
I doubt you could see Freiburg, Staufen, and Munstertal in a day, at an enjoyable pace, and feel like you did them justice. We enjoyed Triberg. Is it worth it to go there just for the falls, only you can answer.
I will add that on our trip we spent nights in Baden-Baden, Gengenbach, Staufen im Breisgau, Eguisheim, and Colmar, so were not rushed seeing those places.
Thank you again for new commentaries:)
I would like to ask if you were ,where would you go 1st day when staying Gengenbach ( except for Gbach) i will arrive there at the weekend( saturday). Baden- Baden? 2-3 hrs enough ? Or Triberg (is it ok in a sunny day or it doesnt matter?
Is there anywhere on the same route with Schiltach ?
if it were me, I'd just stay in town on your first day. Gengenbach is a beautiful village with a lot to see and do. There is a gorgeous church called St. Marien and a Benedictine Abbey, with a lovely garden in back you can walk through. There is the Kinzig Gate Tower, a historic gate at the entrance to the town, a beautiful hike that will take you up above the town for some lovely views. really nice restaurants, some good shops and just general beauty walking through the town and enjoying it. There is a tourist info center where you can get information on the town once you get there.
Another visit you might want to take is to Strasbourg in Alsace, France. It's only about a 30-40 minute by train, and most of the journey will be covered under the KONUS card. Strasbourg is really beautiful with a gorgeous cathedral and definitely worth a visit.
