I haven't stayed there, but have walked past it many times, as we lived in O'gau for 3 years. It's on a quiet side street, but then O'gau is quiet all over when it isn't inundated by bus tour day trippers.
Short walk from the train station and to the town center. Gets good reviews on both TripAdvisor and booking.com. From the photos it looks like a lot of other traditional Bavarian B&Bs. Expect some (or a lot) of kitsch. And by NA standards you'll likely find the beds rock hard. As in a firm mattress on a wooden base; no box spring. This is typical. From what I've seen, I'd stay there.
Thank you so much for your reply, CJean!
It's so great to hear from a former native of the town!! I'm very happy to hear that it is on a quiet side street!
We are prepared for the rather over-the-top kitsch of the town. We want to stay in O'gau for a few nights....using it as a base to tour Linderhof, to take some walks in the mountains, and just to generally soak in the fantastic mountain scenery.
Thanks again,
Virginia
I've stayed there twice - two nights in 2007, when I used it as a base to tour Linderhof before heading north on the Romantic Road, and again for one night in 2013. I don't think there is a place in Oberammergau I'd rather stay at.
I didn't notice the beds being "rock hard"; the room was very comfortable. Gästehaus Richter is one of the most economical accommodations in Oberammergau. Frau Richter speaks very good English, so not speaking German will not be a problem. A lot of English speakers from the NATO base in Oberammergau stay there.
She put out a typically good German breakfast.
@CJean: my dictionary defines Kitsch as "something that appeals to popular or lowbrow taste and is often of poor quality". That certainly does not describe Gästehaus Richter. It's purely simple Bavarian Gemütlichkeit (look that up!).
I would definitely recommend it.

My German is more than adequate to that elementary task. No need to look it up. In German, and as used in Bavaria, simply means coziness, or comfort.
I was using the word kitsch in its more informal sense, but if you prefer to be pedantic, the word can also be defined thusly "....is art or other objects that appeal to popular rather than high art tastes. Such objects are sometimes appreciated in a knowingly ironic or humorous way". It's not a pejorative term, unless you choose to see it as such.
