For those who have been on the GAS tour, about what time did you get back to Trier for your free evening after seeing Burg Eltz? Also, what do you see on the walking tour in Trier but do not go IN and is worth seeing the interior on your own? Thanks!!
I can answer part of your question - we got back to Trier rather late in the afternoon, I believe 4 or 5. That day we had a walking tour in the town of Trier that showed us many things from the outside and then we went inside the main ruins and had a really excellent talk on them. Then we got on the bus and visited Beilstein for lunch and Burg Eltz after that, so it is quite a long day before you are back in Trier. We just had dinner and walked around the square a bit, nothing else. The first night our guide took us into the Dom and did a little talk about it, but I don't think that was officially on the agenda so your situation might be different. I would definitely pop in there, although it won't take you long. We didn't do much in Trier as we were recovering from 4 very busy days in Paris, so we mainly just wandered around the main square in our limited free time. Hope you have a great time - this was an absolutely incredible tour!
You will love the GAS tour! I went last year and am very sorry I did not go a few days earlier to Trier. I did get there the day before the tour started and I did go into the churches and see some sites. Your walking tour is on a Sunday so your not able to see the inside of the churches as church services are being conducted. When I went we were able to hear a concert and see the amazing organ. You will not have the time to go in during the tour. I highly recommend if you have the time, to go at least one or two days earlier to see Trier. That is all your need in Trier as it is a small city. Wonderful to walk around, no public transporation is needed to see Trier. Wonderful restaurants too. I opted to spend my extra days after the tour in Vienna which I am really glad I did. Trier is lovely but Vienna was a must see after the tour.
Ladies you are awesome!
Tamara-Your GAS scrapbook was great and I've been using it to help plan. Thanks for getting me the times coming back from Berg Eltz, thinking we might try doing the amphitheater when we get back before we search for dinner since it doesn't close until 6.
Ann -Good point about Sunday. I will be keeping that in mind. We are staying one extra full day in Vienna after the tour before heading to a few days in Prague as our final destination.
We are stopping along the Rhine before meeting up with the tour in Trier, arriving in Trier about 11 am the day the tour starts. I'm thinking we'll probably drop our bags off and then head to the Landesmuseum and maybe do the Roman Baths there since we don't have any other 'Roman' stops on the tour really. Or, would it be better to do the Dom Complex versus the Baths? Or, can the Dom sorta be done after dinner? Don't know if they lock the churches there.
Thanks!!
I'm glad you are finding our scrapbook useful! I can't find any information about hours, but on TripAdvisor some reviewers are saying it closes at 6 pm. It is free, so maybe you could pop in for a quick look around before you go to the architecture museum? Depends on how you like to sightsee, but just stopping in for a quick look would be worth it to me. It is right in the center of town, so easy to go to.
Your going to Baden-Baden where you can do the baths. I would do that their rather than in Trier. I went to the Baths and it was single sex day and it was a wonderful experience. Baden-Baden is a lovely city so if you don't do the Baths, then you can stroll along the lovely town and see the lovely sights and shops. I found all the places we visited had the most amazing window displays. They were just a feast for the eyes. I took a lot of phtoos of window displays which I normally do not. I would look up the churches on the websites and read the RS guide books for hours of the churches.
Prague is an amzing city and I know you will enjoy it. I went on the week long Prague tour when RS had that tour and found Prague to be enchanting. I would check out my favorite museum, the Alfonse Mucha museum and the Communist museum was very good. I loved the Charles Bridge.
Ann - for Trier I meant we are going to see the ruined Roman Baths. Sorry for the confusion. I didn't know you could 'do the baths' in Trier. I'd love to do them in Baden-Baden, but who am I kidding, I probably won't.
We probably won't do Mucha or Communism while in Prague with only 2 days. One day for Josefov with the medieval museum at the former nunnery, and one day for the Castle complex and surrounding area. Two nights of music as well.
We are excited! Thanks!
On my GAS tour the guide actually had the walking tour guide take us in to the Roman Baths in Trier but I don't thing that is usually done. I think he was trying to set us up with historical context for the baths in Baden-Baden.
I did do the Landesmuseum the day before the tour started. They were having a special Nero exhibit that year which was quite good. One thing I wasn't prepared for was that they would not let me take my purse in and I did not have things stowed in my money belt so I had to mess around with that and get things organized. If I recall, most of the signage was only in German so slightly difficult to understand some of it.
I also enjoyed the Dom and the Konstantin Basilica before the tour.
I would pick which is more of interest to you - the Dom and the Basilica (a few blocks apart) or the Landesmuseum. Or you may just enjoy walking around Trier!
You may be able to figure out closing times for the churches on their websites as both are active churches. The Basilica is now a Lutheran church.

Thanks for the websites Pam! And I think the Landesmuseum is more up our alley. Good to know too about taking bags in. Luckily for me for the signage I can read and speak some German and am continuing to hone my skills for the trip.
I am glad that is helpful! I spent hours at the Landesmuseum even though I hit it during a heat wave and it was pretty hot in there. If I had planned ahead and had everything in my money belt plus could have loaded my pockets with my kleenex and chapstick, lol, I would have been set. If you can read some German you'll be good. Do check ahead at their website for special exhibits. I had studied it and knew about the Nero exhibit that year.
Also, make sure you have a printed out googlemap of the route from the train station to the hotel there in Trier. It is actually an Assisted Living Facility with hotel rooms but many of the taxi drivers don't know it. Altho I had a map my driver still asked a colleague about the directions.
If you are interested I did a Trip Report after this tour.

I’ve really enjoyed reading this thread since I will be on this tour in July 2018. Tamara, where can I find your scrapbook? I’d love to see it!
I just happened to have the archived scrapbook page bookmarked. Tamara’s GAS scrapbook was from 2015.
https://www.ricksteves.com/tours
Editing to add: I’m on a mobile device and all that is linking is the main tour page. 🤔. So, go to that page, scroll down to How to Enter and click on tour scrapbook archives, then open 2015. Warning!!! Do not risk this unless you have time to spend because you’ll be lost!!
Thanks! You can certainly loose track of time looking at these scrapbooks....so much fun!
Thanks Pam! Londa- you will love it!
