Garmische, Fussen and Munich

Hi,
We are flying into Munich in early June and heading to Garmische (4.5 days there), then onto Fussen (3.5 days there) and then Munich (3.5 days there) after subtracting the travel time. I am just getting started planning the itineraries and don't want to miss some of the special places. I'd appreciate if you would share what you would NOT miss and any day trips from Garmische and Fussen. I want to go to Mittenwald. I am traveling with my son, who is graduating from college this week! I want to do fun things he will enjoy and I can keep up with!!! Thanks.

A walk through the Höllentalklamm is my #1 recommendation for Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

You can continue 30 minutes past the end of the gorge to a hut for lunch, at the base of the Zugspitze.

If you enjoy hiking, there is an easy Klettersteig ( via Ferrara) across the face of the Alpspitze I can recommend. No harnesses are necessary for this one. There is a cable to hold onto where you might want it, and the ladders are safe and secure.

It has been a few years since I was at Garmisch-P, but, there was a summer luge ride next to the Stadium which is quite fun. (Although from the look on the operators face, I may have set the speed record for the slowest rider ever)

The Zugspitze is an obvious choice from here as well. There are so many lifts and trails possible from GP. The bike trails through town are also a great deal of fun.

Nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen you might consider visiting Berwang and Ehrwald Austria. Berwang and the Sonnalmbahn (Alpenpanorama Winkemann von Berwang) and Ehrwald for the Sonnenspitze view and maybe the Ehrwalder Alm. For a walk around Garmish checkout the Riessersee and the old Bob Sled run remains (1936 Winter Olympics) and the other side for the Kramerplateauweg and Kriegergedächtniskapelle. The Wank Bahn is worth a visit too. All good sights but nothing on the NOT miss list.

This is just what I needed! I am a bit reluctant to try the luge though...yikes! Have you done that?
I have so much to figure out...I can put these directly in my itinerary.

I appreciate Lola's post, and I think I will hike Höllentalklamm next spring when I'm in Bavaria, but it looks like there are a lot of steps. If you are looking for something that is easier but still gorgeous, I would suggest Partnachklamm (Partnach Gorge), whose entrance is near the Olympic Stadium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There is a very-level paved lower path through the gorge, and a higher path that has a bit of an ascent (and also crosses the gorge 2-3 times via foot bridges). I "hiked"/walked through on the lower path and then returned via the upper path (which has a nice little snack hut with restrooms along it).

EDIT: Added link to Partnachklamm
