garmisch partenkirchen to Oritisei (italy)

How to get from garmisch to ortisei by part public transportation (train, bus etc) and renting a car once we are inside Italy? I guess I am trying to ask how to get from garmisch to whatever town is close enough to Ortisei in Italy where I can rent a car and carry on to Ortisei via car.

And please dont say Bolzano, that is further down then than ortisei, which means I will have to drive BACK up to ortisei

the reason for I am not renting a car from garmisch all the way to italy is because the rest of my driving is in Italy and my trip will end in italy and it is extremely costly to drop off car in another country than the one you picked it up from

(maybe train from garmisch to innsbruck. And from innsbruck, a bus to whatever northern town is closes t to ortisei that also has car rental service ?????)

Can you drive a manual transmission? That may be all that is available. and small places may not allow one-way rentals. There are locations in Bressanone and Brunico. Otherwise, take a bus to Ortisei from one of the the valley locations and rent further along on your trip.

Your only two choices are Bressanone and Bolzano - and probably not too much to choose from. So first find a car to hire in one of these locations, both connected by train to Innsbruck. If the choice is better in Bolzano, a little backtracking will not be a big problem.

I would not consider Brunico - hiring there, provided it can be done, would involve a longer travel time than going to Bolzano and then backtracking.

I don't get why you would be against Bolzano. It's only 40km from Bolzano to Oritisei, about a 50 minute ride through nice scenery.

since it takes about 4 hours to get from garmisch to bolzano (via innsbruck of course), I thought I would cut down the travel time by going to innsbruck and taking a bus/train to whatever italian town has car rental, and then proceed to ortisei

But from what you guy are telling me, it seems it is best to go from garmisch to bolzano and then take a car from there to ortisei
