Garmisch partenkirchen - is mid May a good time to visit?

Thinking of adding garmisch partenkirchen into my trip as I'm interested in seeing the bavarian alps, but nervous that in May will still be snowing and the lakes may not have thawed. How bad is the snow at that time? Is it only in the summit?

I want to go up the mountains and see the greenery in the valleys, if it's still snowing, I may have to strike it off my list. Also if i do go ahead with it, I'm looking for some recommendations of easy hikes I can do under 2 hours that offers a picturesque view. Preferably on paved or gravel paths, that do not need hiking sticks or involve steep climbs.

We lived in Augsburg for four years and loved going to Garmisch. It can snow at the higher altitudes for sure that time of the year, but you should be able to enjoy the area.

I did a two day hike up to the top of the Zugspitze twice, one in June and the second in July. During the hike in July, it was sleeting the entire second day, but our group continued to hike to top.

You probably won't wish to do the two day hike. Not even sure it is offered in May.

There can be snow at higher elevations in May, but it's very rare to have a snowfall that late, and the lakes will not be frozen over. May is the start of tourist season. You can google the average temperatures, the weather should be nice (although rainy). It's entirely possible you will not be able to get to the high point on the Zugspitze; it was still closed due to snow the second week of June this year when I was up there. It will be green in the valley, and flowers will be in bloom.

You can easily hike the Partnachklamm trails. They are not hard.

Thank you. Interestingly I read that May wasn’t rainy in that area, July had the most rainfall. But if it does rain, is it likely to rain the entire day or is it just short sessions? Weather is out of my hands unfortunately.

Partnachklamm trail

Is this the trail through the gorge? If so, I’m looking for more a scenic hike with lots of greenary around, any suggestions for that?

Zugspitze; it was still closed due to snow the second week of June this year when I was up there

Were the other mountains open when Zugspitze was closed given they are not as tall?

"Weather is out of my hands unfortunately" - it's out of almost everyone's hands.

Any easy, attractive walk within your time frame is the Hammersbach Trail. Grab a bite to eat at the Hammersbach Hotel and take the trail back to Garmisch.
