Garmisch For Non Sporting Types

Garmisch looks like the like the most convenient place to stay a few days and make day trips. However, all I read about it is that it is a winter sports, outdoors, etc. mecca. We are not into that sort of thing and certainly not going up to the Zugspitze, so I'm wondering if there is anything else to do there.

You do not need to be a sport type to go up the Zugspitze, you just need to board a train.

Let's see. I specifically say that we are not interested in the outdoors or going up the Zugspitze. I get two responses, one saying to do something outdoors and the other to go up the Zugspitze. This is real helpful.

Why is it that so many people feel the need to post when they have nothing to say? Is it a reflexive Pavlovian dog sort of thing where they see a word like "Zugspitze" and then cannot help themselves to respond even if it is irrelevant, or in this case, directly contrary to what was being asked? Perhaps some psychologist out there can explain this.

Unfortunately, it is not under your control as to how people answer. After your second post I wonder who will offer you the advice you seek. A guide book may be a good resource.

What time of year are you visiting? That makes a big difference.

And we're all just regular people here volunteering our experience. Don't take offense when people are just trying to help and not doing you any harm.

The time of year is very important due to the snow. I totally get the lack of interest in outdoor activities. I went once in the winter, and while everyone else was skiing, a friend and I took a sleigh ride. That was a bazillion years ago when I was in my 30s and she was in her 40s. We had fun all wrapped up gliding over the snow "in a one-horse open sleigh."

In the 3rd week of June, 2011 my husband and I were driving in the area and decided we would stop in Garmisch for lunch on the way from Fussen to Berchtesgaden. It was a ZOO -- so crowded with people, cars and bikes everywhere that we couldn't stand it and drove on. We didn't even stop to get snacks for the drive.

In any resort kind of town there should be lots of good restaurants and expensive shopping. This link to TripAdvisor's list of things to do -- http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g187302-Activities-GarmischPartenkirchenUpperBavariaBavaria.html -- might help. It's mostly scenery and outdoor stuff, as you say, but there are a few other options there. Be sure to go all the way to the bottom of the page for the links listed under "Trusted travel advice..."
