Garmisch and Linderhof

Hi all,
As part of our journey through Bavaria this summer, we'll be staying three nights in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. I figured the day we arrive there we will check out Old Town, the Olympic Village, etc. We already have tickets for Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau for one of the days. And plan to do Zugspitze the other full day there, hoping that the weather permits it. My question is where to fit in Linderhof? Would you go to Zugspitze in the morning, and then Linderhof that afternoon? (this would be the day before N. and H. castles)
Thank you!

It has been several years since we did all that stuff in Garmisch. I don't remember spending more than 2-3 hours in Linderhof. Check to see the times for tours.

As for the Zugspitze, its wonderful, you can go up the cog train or the cable car. I think the cable car is faster. Not sure what time of the year you plan to go, fog can be bad some times of the year in the morning.

Since the Zugspitze is less likely to have clouds in the morning, it makes sense to go then. It's an hour's drive from there to Linderhof. Then half an hour back to GP.

@geovagriffith we plan to go mid-July so hoping Zugspitze will be clear then!

I just took some family through all those places, but I drove, so that may be an issue if you are not. We did the cable car up the Zugspitze and train down. The train actually goes to the glacier, so you'll have to use another short lift to the base for the last accent. Note the snow currently blocks getting out to the cross, but that should clear in a few weeks. The train is longer, and slower, and 2/3 of the trip is in a tunnel, so I really can't recommend it. But if you go that way make sure you park at the Eibsee station. The first car up the mountain is at 0830 and I recommend taking that one.

You can easily fit Ettal and Linderhof into a day with the Zugspitze if you drive.

If you go to Linderhof make sure you take the tour in the language you prefer, as they have several offerings. It gets crowded also. Linderhof is much better than Neuschwanstein.

Thank KGC. Did you do the Zugspitze round trip or the Garmisch-Classic round trip? I can't really tell what the difference is. We do have a car, so should make it easy to get to Linderhof in the afternoon. Also, did you buy Zugspitze tickets online in advance or did you purchase that day onsite?

I drove to Eibsee and took the family up on the tram and down via the cog rail. We could have left from the Garmisch bahnhof, but that made no sense as parking there costs, and the scenery is the same if you drive vs. the train. There was no problem with getting a ticket at the station in the morning, this despite the fact that the area was heavily touristed with a major trail running event and the Euro Cup matches. I highly recommend you park near whichever means you plan to return by (ie. the train station if you return by the cog rail, etc); the parking lots are seperate.

If you go to Linderhof, and then to Ettal, you can detour through Oberammergau with a short detour (it's just a couple miles) easily in an afternoon. Frankly Oberammergau is not that special outside of the Passion Play (held next in 2032); you can see towns just as nice, without the tourist shops, with minimal effort.
