Fussen to Zurich or Munich to Zurich?

Hello!
We are flying into Munich and staying 2 days in June 2019. We then have plans to travel to Fussen to see the castles spending one night in Fussen as of now. However, my quandry comes with trying to get from Fussen to Zurich and then traveling on to Lucerene. We are picking up an additional traveler in Zurich.
It seems like there is NO easy way to get from Fussen to Zurich and on some sites, it seems easier to go back to Munich first? If that is the case, not sure why we should stay in Fussen?
Any help on best paths and methods (bus, train, boat?) would be greatly appreciated! We have pre purchased Swiss Travel Passes as we will be in Switzerland for the next 7 days after Fussen. I thought if I could get to the border, we could then use the travel pass to finish our trip to Zurich but which border city to travel to and what form of travel to use to get there!
Help my fellow more experienced travelers!
Many Thanks in Advance

Are you going to Füssen just to see the castles?

(edit) If you are going there just to see the castles, then just keep moving and go on to someplace more on the route to Zurich, like Lindau, and stay the night there. At least you'll break up the journey that way.

The only site that counts is www.bahn.com. Deutsche Bahn runs to trains, at least as far as the border. Most show going to Kaufbeuren or Buchloe, then you are on the main rail line between Munich and Zurich.

Here is a low cost way to do that. Buy a 2-person Regio-Ticket Allgaeu-Schwaben for 30 EUR (assuming there are 2 of you), then take a train from Fuessen to Kaufbeuren, then change to the ALX train to Lindau. You will have to travel after 9 am on weekdays. At Lindau buy a local ticket to St Margrethen or Buchs SG in Switzerland, about 16 EUR for 2. If your Swiss Travel Pass is in effect, then it is free on the next train to Zurich, then to Luzern.

Thanks for the insight - We are going to see the castles but want to spend some time hiking there too and seeing the sights. I may look into breaking up the travel day!
I really appreciate the specifics for travel getting to the border. I will look on the DB site related to those specific trips - Do you think I need to pre purchase of can we purchase the day of. There will be 5 of us - picking up the 6th in Zurich so while not large, more than 2 people to get on the same train!
Thank you!

For 5 adults and on a weekday, suggest buying a 5-person Regio-Ticket Allgaeu-Schwaben out of a vending machine at the station. Cost is 51 EUR, and write everyone's name on the back of the ticket in ink. Take the 9:05 train to Kaubeuren and there change to the ALX train to Lindau, arriving at noon.

Then buy 5 tickets to St Margrethen, Switzerland. Take the 12:25 S-Bahn to Bregenz, Austria, arriving at 12:37, then changing to the S-Bahn to St Margrethen, departing at 12:47, arriving St Margrethen at 1:04 pm. That will cost 34 EUR for the 5 of you.

At St Margrethen, board the 1:13 pm train to Zurich, showing your valid Swiss Travel Passes when the conductor comes by. It arrives at Zurich at 2:51 pm. Then you can pick up your 6th person and take the next convenient train to Luzern.

Price could be less if some of the 5 are children, you are the parents. That brings the free Family Card into play with the Travel Passes.
