I just canceled my Munich rental car that I had for a month’s trip through Italy. I’m now dropping it off in downtown Garmisch. How do I get from there to a bus or train station that will get me to Venice in a timely fashion?
Also, I’d like to get another rental car in or outside of Rome, on my last day there...which is Sunday, 8 July. I want to drive it north, around the Tuscany area and drop it off in Cortina, where I’ll be my last two nights of my trip. If I drop it in the Dolomites, is there any transportation back to Munich?
Thank you for your help!!!

You can look at schedules at www.bahn.com.
It will take about 8 hours to get from Garmisch to Venice. Looks like there is a train replacement bus from Mittenwald to Innsbruck, then a direct train to Venice if you can leave Garmisch at 10 am. So there is track work on the rail line between Mittenwald and Innsbruck.
You might have trouble dropping a rental car off in Cortina on a Sunday because all the agencies will be closed on Sunday. Transport options north are not good either. You might need to drop it on a Saturday. Depends on the name of the agency you use (Hertz, Avis, etc). You need to research the rental options your self. If you can drop it in Bolzano, you can get a train to Munich pretty easy.
Thank you. I’d be leaving Cortina for Munich on Saturday. How could I get from Cortina to Munich?
Again, check what is open in Bolzano on a Saturday for the rental company you are using, then get to Bolzano station. www.bahn.com will show you the trains to Munich. A few will be direct, but mostly with connections along the way.
See if you can drop the car in Bressanone / Brixen and leave by train from there. It would avoid some backtracking.
When I ask for train schedules, the fastest and least expensive from Garmisch to Venice, leaves at 9am and gets into Venice about 6p...but it goes through Munich, not Innsbruck. Im at a loss as to what to do. Our reservations are for only 2 nights in Venice and we’re going to be getting there too late and be too tired to enjoy our first night in Venice! The only reason i need to go to Garmisch is to drop off a Hertz rental car, and even though the town of Fussen, where we’re staying, has a Hertz office, Auto Europe who booked it...tells me I need to go to the Garmisch Hertz office ... what should we do? Can i get from Garmisch to Venice by way of Innsbruck or do i have to go north to get south? Thanks!!
Look at the schedule and you will see you can leave Garmisch-Partenkirche at 10:02 and go Mittenwald to Innsbruck and catch the same train as the one you would by going to Munich at 9:07.
Yes, you are a long way from Venice with some very high mountains in the way.
