Fussen to Rothenburg car rental

We would like to drive the Romantic Road from Fussen to Rothenburg ob Der Tauber. There does not seem to be convenient car rental companies common to both towns. Anything I can find is almost an hour pick up and drop off away from each town. Is there anyone who has rented a car in Fussen and dropped off in Rothenburg? Or at least close to these towns?

No. Garmisch is about an hour from Fuessen though. The Romantic Road is really not scenic. It's just a run of the mill 2 lane road with so-so scenery.

I agree with Paul. Anyone who just drives 3-4 hours on the Romantic Road from Füssen to Rothenburg will be really disappointed. The road itself is nothing special, just a winding, 2-lane country road, clogged in the summer with tourists, truck traffic, and farm vehicles. It's the towns along the road that make it special.

In 2007, I made my own trip along the Romantic Road, using only public transportation. I spent four days (3 full plus 2 half days) between Wieskirche and Rothenburg, traveling only a few hours each day and spending most of my time in the towns along the Road, specifically Wieskirche, Landsberg, Donauwörth, Harburg, Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl, Feuchtwangen, and Rothenburg. Of the eight, I would definitely rate Nördlingen as the most interesting. Although it is almost a copy of Rothenburg, it is smaller and far less touristy. I does have complete wall with a Wehrgang you can walk on and a lot of Fachwerk buildings. It lacks a Christmas shop and a Crime-and-Punishment Museum, but those things I can live without. It has a church steeple you can climb for a great view of the surrounding area. I spent almost an entire day there and hated to leave.

If I were doing the trip, I would take the train from Füssen to Nördlingen, spend the night there, then finish with the bus trip (approx 3 hours) along the actual road from Nördlingen via Dinkelsbühl and Feuchtwangen to Rothenburg.

Both are smallish places at the end of their respective rail branch lines.

Clearly you will be going to one or the other from somewhere, and after the other will go somewhere else.

Get the car before you go to the first one and return it wherever you are going after the second one.

There is parking available at both.
