My husband and I would appreciate suggestions to better plan our trip to Germany. We are looking for ideas about the sequence of the trip? Car rental or Train? or Both? Hotel suggestions?
1. Considering flying into Frankfurt and out of Munich?
2. Arrive in Frankfurt and go to the Rhine and Mosel region. We want to spend four days in this area. My husband is a winemaker in the USA and would like to see as much as possible. Possible trip to Alsace France to tour the northern wine region there. Trier looks like a neat place to visit - would you recommend staying there? What are your recommendations for towns to stay in the Rhine and Mosel region to gain a true experience.
3. We are considering driving to Stuttgart next to see the Porsche and Mercedes Benz Museum.
4. Rothenburg for a night.
5. Munich for two nights
6. Fussen for two nights to visit the Neuschwanstein Castle and Zugspitze
Thank you
1 In Frankfurt, out Munich is good
2 Trier is a great city to visit, it is the oldest city in Germany and you will see lots of Roman history. Highly recommend it for a day or two. If you decide to rent a car, which helps out visiting all the smaller cities, check out Burg Eltz castle about an hour from Trier.
3 Mercedes Benz Museum is definitely a highlight, one of the best museums I have been to in a long time. Have not made it to the Porsche Museum, but planning on it this year.
4 Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a beautiful, medieval city.
5 For Munich include Nymphenburg castle for their grand gardens and beautiful interior. And have a beer ;)
6 Beautiful area to end your Germany trip. For Neuschwanstein, make sure you go as early as possible. If you wait until 10 or 11 am it will be filled with tour groups and bus loads are dropping more groups off. Once you get a time-stamped ticket in the town of Hohenschwangau, make your way up the mountain to the Marienbruecke (if there is enough time before your tour) and take pictures of the castle from the bridge. It is an amazing view! After that it is a 10 min walk uphill to the castle entrance.
I really enjoyed the Roman sites in Trier. I preferred Trier as a day trip from Cochem. With limited time in the area, I personally would do a day trip to Trier only. Cochem was a good place to stay because it was pretty and small, but big enough to have enough food and restaurant choices. I stayed at a hotel that was also a winery, and the vineyards were right outside our bedroom door. The advice to get to Neuschwanstein early is good. You will have much shorter lines for tickets if you get there early. I think Munich is worth another night, but of course it depends on what all you want to see there. One night in Rothenburg is good. It's best later in the evening. If the Nightwatchman is still doing tours, it is a good, entertaining tour!
Thank you so much for your responses and ideas. I will look into Cochem as a place to stay. Karen, do you happen to remember the name of the winery/hotel you stayed at? I think that would be really spectacular.
Any ideas about a one day river cruise in the Rhine/Mosel region?
The place in Cochem was Weingut Rademacher. I think there are other similar places, too. You might look for places with Weingut in the name. There are plenty of options for day cruises on either river so hopefully someone will come on here with details about them. I took a Rhine river day cruise years ago, and it was nice. I sadly don't remember the details, though.
