Dear Travelers, taking a side trip from Munich airport to Bavaria to see castles and scenery. I have 3 nights total, will be renting a car. thinking of staying in Fussen and Innsbruck before heading to downtown Munich. Any suggestions of towns we should stay in?
thank you
Fuessen is a charming old town. We stayed twice at the Hotel zum Hechten. This is less than 10 minutes from Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. A mile or so from the castles are the Tegelbergbahn cable car trip and the Tegelberg Sommerrodelbahn (luge ride). The Zugspitze, Germany's tallest mountain trip is 40 minutes away in Ehrwald, Austria.

You've got Mittenwald, Garmisch and if you want to throw in more Ludwig stops- Prien am Chiemsee, lake access to Herreninsel/ Herrenchiemsee New Palace- all just a few hour drive from Fussen or Innsbruck on your way back to Munich.
You also have Ludwig's Linderhof Palace and the Wieskirche nearby.
If you haven't decided where you are going, how can you know you need a car? I've done a lot of travel in that area and never needed a car to get where I wanted to go. Pick what you want to see, then research public transportation, before deciding that a car is necessary. Travel is so much less expensive without a car.
You could take the S-Bahn to Munich Hbf, then the train to Oberammergau. From there you can go by RVO bus to Füssen, Ettal, Linderhof, and Garmiisch-Partenkirchen. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you can go to Mittenwald and Seefeld by train; you can even go to Innsbruck by train from Garmisch.
