Fussen, Garmish or Mittenwald?

After leaving Munich, our twin daughters want to see the Zugspitze and Neuschweinstein. Any suggestions on a route to make this doable? We have 3 days/nights to accomplish this part of the trip. Should we stay in Fussen, see the castles, then take a day and make the long train ride to see the Zugspitze? OR Stay in a place near the Zugspitze one night, see it, then travel to Fussen and stay a night there? Thoughts? Thanks.

You can stay in Fuessen and see the castles. You can do the Zugspitze, which can be done from the Austrian side in Ehrwald, about 40 minutes away from Fuessen. Here it’s one 20 minute cable car ride to the top. The exact same place you’ll wind up going from Garmisch, Germany.

Although Fussen and Mittenwald are more attractive towns than GP, GP does have a couple of nice pockets. Throwing Fussen, Zugspitze and Mittenwald all into the mix does cause a minor problem in terms of having one base for three nights - train or bus times from GP to Fussen will likely be over 2 hours, Fussen to Mittenwald even longer.

If Mittenwald is a must (very pretty), I'd spend one night in Fussen and two in GP. From GP there is easy access to Mittenwald, Eibsee/Zugspitze, Linderhof Palace and Ettal Abbey. GP also has two gorges which are worth the trouble, if you are up to it.
