Further to question on Munich hotels... restaurants!

First of all thanks to Jeff, Mimi and Dawn... I have booked the hotel that you kindly recommended to me.

My next question is: as I'll be by myself for the first evening/next day lunch, any recommendations on places to eat out? In my own city (Marseille) I know places to eat where you can just sit down by yourself and have a casual meal (equivalent of diners in North America). Ideally I'd like the kind of place where I can sit down with a full meal but where it's not out of place for a person to eat by themself.

I'm not looking for kebab shops or that kind of thing though, I can get that here!

Try Ayinger Wirtshaus on Platzl, right across the street from the Hofbräuhaus. Very nice place. I was comfortable there eating alone, at a small table at the front window. Food and service were excellent.

Ian,

I usually travel solo so I'm quite used to dining by myself, and have never had any issues with that. One place that I always visit on every trip to Munich is Opatija. They have two restaurants in the city, and I always stop at the one close to the famous Hofbräuhaus. They have a good selection of menu items (including Italian, which is usually my preference), the food has always been good and the service is exceptional. It seems to be very popular as the place gets quite busy in the evenings, which is why I tend to dine earlier (~18:00 or so).

Even if I haven't been to Munich for a year or two, I always seem to be able to walk right to the restaurant, almost with my eyes closed.

Either of the beer gardens in the Englischergarten will do fine.

I quite like the Pfalzer Winstube in the Residenz complex, although the wine is more of an attraction than the food, which is basic but edible.

Thanks for your recommendations - I will definitely try some of these places out, it's almost a shame that I'll just be in Munich for just a day!

We enjoyed dinner at Zum Augustiner on the Marienplatz. We shared a table with a couple from Estonia and 2 friends from California. We had a lively conversation and typical German food within a historical beer garden.

I found Halali near the southern end of the Englischer Garten, went in for a solo lunch, and liked it so much I went back the next day. Rustic yet classy interior, and very friendly service.

While living in Germany I had numerous solo dinners in midrange and upscale places, and no one ever batted an eye. By contrast for instance I recall in Italy it was less common and a bit less socially acceptable, and you'd meet the occasional raised eyebrow or such. Didn't spend enough time in France to compare their ways. But Germany, no problem at all.
