Fun places to visit between Kassel and Berlin

Hi everyone,

we will be driving from Hessen to Berlin in June and I wondered if anyone had any resources for finding some fun/memorable places to visit, even for a couple hours, on the way to Berlin. We have seen Wartburg, Erfurt, Leipzig, but that was without our now 7 year old. I could see all those places again but wasn't sure if there wasn't a fun place to see that he might enjoy also.....I mean I am sure there may be. I am also going to research, but thought I'd check in w some of the wonderful experts here :)

Hi,

Lots of choices here but first I suggest Minden or Hildesheim. Since the transportation is no problem for you, you can go from Minden to Porta Westfalica.

The last time in order to get to the top I had to arrange for a taxi from Minden train station. A very nice and interesting view from the top.

You're right about Leipzig, an intriguing and super culturally interesting place.

We are in Kassel now and plan to visit Hann, Münden this week. With a car and heading towards Berlin you could also stop in Göttingen and then head up to Goslar then Potsdam on your way to Berlin. You could also head up through the Harz Mountain area stopping in Wernigerode and possibly Quedlinburg before going to Potsdam and Berlin. I particularly think a 7 year old would enjoy a couple of nights in Wernigerode to experience the steam train (turn around by the main train station), the half-timbered town center and the beautiful castle perched on the hill you can easily walk to.

Perhaps with a small detour via Einbeck, which has numerically a bit less half-timbered houses than Hannoversch Münden, but architecturally much better ones, e.g. the Eicke House.

Hi,

If you take a detour to Einbeck, be sure to try the Einbecker Bier, if you drink beer and especially want to try another North German beer, Einbecker Pils. I'm glad we can get that in SF.
