Freiburg to fussen via lake Constance

We will have a car for a few days for some very specific destinations in the Rhineland and our plan then includes going from Freiburg to Fussen to Munich. Looked like the train routes are a bit tricky and that a car would be a good option? We thought of driving along lake Constance and maybe taking the ferry, spending the night in fussen and seeing sights there, and dropping the car in Munich the next day. Does this make sense?

It's not at all tricky to do that trip by train. But you can of course do it by car also.

By mainline trains, you back track to Mannheim and never go near the lake and takes at least 6 hours. Along the lake is by regional trains and takes over 7 hours. By car its 3 1/2 hours along the lake, longer if you use the ferry.

Some places along Lake Constance are not reachable by train, for example Meersburg, Birnau church, Pfahlbauten lake dwelling museum. I would keep the car
