Frankfurt Vicinity Christmas Markets

We will fly into Frankfurt (Main) on 28 Nov 2023 and depart the 30th by train to Freiburg. We will be staying near the Hauptwache. The Christmas Market at the Römer will be very close and we will visit it the first night.

The next day we would like to take a day trip to a nearby town or suburb to visit a Christmas Market and sight-see. We are considering Mainz as we already know the town and it is less than 50 minutes by Sbahn from the Hauptwache. Are there other towns (closer?) that we should be considering? Would Bad Homburg be a good choice?

We would like to keep the connections simple and the train rides under an hour.

Haven't checked dates for the markets yet, but Bad Homburg is only on the weekends.
Mainz would be great, Wiesbaden is close by and you could possibly do both on the same day? Rüdesheim isn't far, either. Limburg and Marburg might be possible, but again, not sure of opening dates. Both are an hour by regional train from Frankfurt.

If the Mainz visit is just for the market, as you make it sound, it would be simple to hit both Rüdesheim and Mainz on a single day outing from Frankfurt.
Fr - Mz 40 mins direct; Mz - R'heim 50 mins one change in Wiesbaden; R-heim - Fr 70 mins direct.

Thanks for reminding me to check the dates. I knew that the Frankfurt Christmas Market would be open. I have learned that Mainz and Marburg will not be open. Wiesbaden and Rüdesheim will be open. Some markets are yet to announce their opening date. We can always make last minute decisions on day trips.
