Frankfurt to Zermatt to Munich

I could really use some advice. I'll be working for several days in Frankfurt in Sept. Then I'll have six days to enjoy. My wife and I have always wanted to visit Zermatt. So general plan is as follows: We will have enjoyed Frankfurt all week as well as a day trip to Rothenburg OBT while working so I thought we would

Day 1- leave Frankfurt early, stop at Heidelberg and then stay in Strasbourg, France on the way down.

Day 2 and 3- Then on to Zermatt via Bern or Lucern. Two nights in Zermatt

Day 4 and 5- Zermatt to Garmisch-P or Fussen or Innsbruck for two nights. (Ideas?)

Day 6 drive to Munich, fly back to the States from Munich.

Six busy days.
So my two questions. 1) Is it too much? 2)would you recommend we travel by Train or rental car? Any help would really be appreciated.

I would look at train all the way, and concentrate on Switzerland.
1. Strasbourg
2. Bern
3. Zermatt
4. Zermatt
5. Luzern
6. Munich

I would not consider Rothenburg as a day trip from Frankfurt. Travel is 3 hours each way. There are other medieval, walled towns that are closer.

My recommendation is Büdingen, only 1 hour by train from Frankfurt. This town has never been bombed, is chock full of half-timbered buildings and has wonderful, massive towers and walls. Book a private tour here with the Tourist Info (cost is 51€) and they will take you inside the walls and up on to the towers.
You might want to include a stop in Gelnhausen too, which is where you switch trains to go to Büdingen and to return to Frankfurt.

I've been to Zermatt, and I've been to smaller Alphine towns like Muerren. Much prefer the latter.

Just in case you don't know this already, you can't drive to Zermatt. Cars are not allowed in the town. You park in Täsch and take a shuttle train.

From Strasbourg to Zermatt, I'd take the fastest connections, 5 hours via Bern, although not all departures actually connect there. From Zermatt to Luzern, you can take a portion of the Glacier Express scenic route, 6 hours via Goeschenen (but it would take 10 hours if you used that route to go all the way to Munich).
