You guys are the best so I'm asking for guidance. Four seniors flying into FRA at 9:30 am, then we need to get to Strausbourg late afternoon in order to board ship for river cruise. Please give thoughts on how to best make that trip. My understanding either bus or train are options. If we took a train, should tickets be purchased in advance. Thanks to all.
Here is info for the Lufthansa Bus. http://www.lufthansa.com/online/portal/lh/us/info_and_services/from_to_airport?nodeid=3163668&
Takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes and costs 49 euro per person.
You can get a train from the airport with one or two changes for faster ride. Hourly departures, takes 2 hours and 15 minutes and costs 59.60 euro per person. That is the price at the station at the spur of the moment.
You could buy advance purchase tickets, but since they are nonrefundable, you could risk forfeiting if your flight is delayed. You could only get as far as Kehl (across the river from Strasbourg) and they would cost 32.25 euro per person. Kehl could actually be closer to the cruise dock than central Strasbourg. You'll need to get an exact address. You could get a taxi from Kehl station, or continue on the train for an additional 4.10 euro per person.
The cheap way would take about 4 hours and require 4 train changes with a "Quer durch Lands" ticket and cost 68 euro for the whole group on week days and 44 euro on weekends. Travel is only allowed on local trains, thus more time and changes involved.
We scheduled the Lufthansa bus before - they left us stranded in Heidelberg! It filled up and even though we had reservations & had pre-paid the driver took what were clearly regular passengers and then those who spoke fluent German. We kept asking him what about us all he said was I'm full! We had to make our way to the train station and take the train to the airport. Fortunately we did not miss our flight. I tried contacting them several times about the problem & a refund - never heard a word back. We rely completely on the DB for our transportation these days!
Check Fly and Rail options.
If you haven't made plane reservations, consider going a day earlier. Too many times my plane has been delayed, as much as a day late.
I can't speak to Christi's experience, but I took the Lufthansa bus from FRA to Strasbourg and it was fine. I bought it as part of my flight; the "airport code" for the Strasbourg bus stop, which is right next to the train station, is XER. The bus went nonstop from the airport to Strasbourg. There are other Lufthansa buses to other places, including Heidelberg.
