Frankfurt to start of tour in Trier

On Best of Germany, Austria, Switzerland tour Aug. 30. Land in Frankfurt 4PM. Spend the night there and take train in morning or take train in the dark arriving in Trier 10-11P. Sounds like the train ride could be nice in daylight hours, but means 1 night on Frankfurt.

My choice would be night in Frankfurt, train in morning. You will be tired after your flight. Finish the journey in the morning when you have had some sleep and can enjoy the views.

Or you could go part way by taking a direct train to Bacharach on the Rhine. Direct trains from the airport every hour taking a bit less than 1 hour.

Spend the night in Frankfurt! There is so much to see and do here. Why does everyone think they should leave right away as though there is nothing to see here?
You just got off a long flight, come into town, have a meal, walk around for an hour, (the river is gorgeous at sunset as is the rest of the city) and get a good nights sleep.

The GAS was our first tour. It was amazing. We got into Frankfurt early so we jumped right on the train.
It was a nice train ride then we walked to hotel. Coming in late I would spend the night too. It was a beautiful walk we both enjoyed it..
have a wonderful trip..I know you will love it.

One more vote for spend the night in Frankfurt, we just completed GAS last week and trained from FRA to Trier mid day. The ride was scenic. FYI, though I had studied the schedules in advance, upon arrival we found the service desk at FRA and just asked them to ticket the quickest train to Trier. FYI, our tickets were validated by a conductor on board for both our trains. Masks required. Also, fyi the first train to Koblenz was quite crowded and the aisles narrow for luggage. Note there are overhead bins large enough to stow your luggage. Lastly, when we arrived in Trier, there were no taxis outside the train station but we waited about 10 minutes and one showed up. It was 10 Euro to the hotel. Also, Rick Steves noted in his comments that crowds are back, they are. I would recommend you make dinner reservations if at all possible and/or have an emergency stash of wine, cheese and bread, pack a corkscrew in you checked bag.. you'll be the most popular tourist on the bus...

Dootle - How was your tour? I just signed up to take the GAS Tour in July. Are you saying to make dinner reservations in Trier or in all the towns you visit? Thanks!

We did what Sam suggests. Since you dont visit the Middle Rhine on the tour, we enjoyed resting up in Bacharach, which was about halfway to Trier.
