Frankfurt Rhein main is frankfurt AM? Or different airport? In addition to my itinerary

I wonder if Frankfurt Rhein main is Frankfurt AM? Or different airport? I'm confused.

May i ask if there is Bahn train available directly from Frankfurt airport or need to walk to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof station and then take train to Rothenburg ob der Tauber? If take a train from frankfurt Main to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, does it require the passenger to wait in advance in order to board the train? How long to wait in advance?

S or U Bahn train available at Frankfurt Main airport? Or need to walk to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof station?

From DB Bahn website, I type FRA in the field and select the option - Frankfurt airport the departure field and click "search" and the result shows Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Fernbf, Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Regionalbf for different train service time instead.

I am thinking to plan a visit to Rothenburg ob der Tauber for few hours from Frankfurt (the start point) and then proceed to Munich for 3 or 4 days and then proceed to Berlin for 3 or 4 days. But I won't spend my time sightseeing in Frankfurt. After all travelling in Germany, I have to go back to frankfurt in order to go back to my homeland.

Rothenburg - Old Town walk, Crime museum (enough time or too rushed) for few hours sightseeing without staying overnight. I have to go to Munich in the early evening. I wonder if it is rushed to enjoy the sight of Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag in the early evening for few hours?

From Frankfurt airport, i book the ticket for ICE train to visit Rothenburg on the spot or in advance? I'm not sure if its rushed. Because I'm not familiar with Frankfurt airport and ICE train route. I prefer to board ICE train at for example, 8:15am after the airport will arrive at Frankfurt Airport at 6:00am. Is it plenty of time or rushed?

Actually, it's Frankfurt Rhein Main, because the town is Frankfurt am Main, or Frankfurt on the Main (river). The Main river joins the Rhein at Mainz, just down stream of Frankfurt. Frankfurt am Rhein is a different town from Frankfurt am Oder, on the Oder river, which is on the border between Germany and Poland.

Frankfurt am Main is the name of the town. This is to distinguish it from Frankfurt an der Oder, which is a different town. The Main is a the river it is on.

The Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is just Frankfurt Airport. "Frankfurt Rhein Main" is just a name given the the larger region, which is a region centred on Frankfurt, where both the Main and the Rhine river run trhough....

I notice that there is only ICE train and transit to the regional train to go to Rothenburgh but i prefer to take S-Bahn or U-Bahn train to Rothnburg from Frankfurt. Very cheaper. But it seems that there is no S or U-bahn train.

When looking things up please be careful of spelling.

You want to go to Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

Yes, the fastest way to get there - it is fairly far - is to take a fast train, an ICE, for part of the way and change at Würzburg and again at Steinach(bei Rothenburg ob der Tauber). Both of the last two are local trains, RE and then RB.

Regional trains do the same route. To Würzburg it takes about 1h47 and 16 intermediate station calls and 3h17 overall; whereas the ICE takes 1h06 and only stops once, and the trip overall is 2h29, a full 47 minutes faster.

If you want the slower train go to the details of the request and uncheck fastest and do check (tick) Deutschland Ticket which guarantees no fast trains....

time or money, your choice

the U-Bahn is the underground train, on local to cities, like the NYC subway.

The S-Bahn is only local heavy rail service in the near vicinity of a city. Doesn't go further. That's when the RB slow regional train and RE faster regional train, IC, EC and ICE come in for long distance. You are talking about nearly 200 kilometres

I think what I am about to say is accurate, but we have lots of factcheckers on the forum....

There are 2 train stations (bahnhof) in Frankfurt Airport:

The Regionalbf is below the terminal and is where you catch the trains to go into downtown
Frankfurt and around the metropolitan area.

The Fernbahnhof is the long-distance train station, located across the main terminal road
in the Squaire business center/hotel complex.

The S and U bahns are the local xport around Frankfurt, which you would access from the
Regionalbf. You won't take those directly to get to Rothenburg odt. At best, you would
take them to get to the main Frankfurt train station. But most likely the routing ends up
being the same as Nigel has summarized. So getting the train in the Fernbahnhof is
most likely the way to go.

In the Fernbahnhof area there are restaurants and a grocery store, so also a good place to
pick up food & drink for the train trip.

The ICE trains are accessed in the Fernbahnhof.

My recommendation: Buy a "Deutschlandticket" (the easiest way is via tranzer. com, even if there is a little markup there) and travel the whole route FRA - Rothenburg - Munich by regional trains. The time loss compared to the long- distance train is tolerable (FRA-Rothenburg 30-45 min; Rothenburg - Munich 20- 40 min). This gives you full flexibility, as compared to other discounted ticketes the DT is not subject to time restrictions and it is also valid for urban transport in Munich (and Berlin). You are just not allowed to use a long-distance train (ICE / IC / EC).

Your route would then be:

(1) FRA - Würzburg - Steinach Rothenburg (e.g. 7:09-10:51 or 8:09-11:51 or 9:09-12:51)
(2) Rothenburg - Steinach - Treuchtlingen - Augsburg or Ingolstadt -
Munich (e.g. 16:05-19:20 or, better, as there are no transfers after Steinach: 17:05-20:20)

(3) For Munich-Berlin, book a cheap saver fare ticket, preferably 2-3 weeks in advance.

Look up all the details at https://int.bahn.de/en/. Select "Deutschlandticket connections only" for legs (1) and (2), deselect it for leg (3).

Please note:

  1. for leg (1) some connections imply a bus from FRA, Terminal 1 to the station "Frankfürt Süd" to reach the train to Würzburg. However, this is included in the Deutschlandticket.

  2. the terminus of the regional train is often not Würzburg, but Bamberg or another destination. Don't let this confuse you. The train stops in Würzburg for approx. 15 minutes - set your alarm clock in case you fall asleep.

  3. on the train from Würzburg to Steinach, look for a seat near the front. The transfer time in Steinach is short and the stairs to the underpass (you have to transfer from platform 3 to platform 5) are at the end of the platform (in the direction of travel).

  4. in case you have to change trains in Augsburg: The platforms are often double occupied, one train at the north end and one at the south end. Look at the indicator of direction on the train, to make sure you take the right one.

Download the "DB Navigator" app and familiarize yourself a little with it. This way you will always be informed about actual rail traffic.

Have a good trip.
