Frankfurt: overnight layover

We have an overnight layover in Frankfurt in late January. We’ll arrive about 5:00 pm from another Schengen country. We’ll need to be back at the airport at 7:30 am for flight to USA. I’m thinking we would stay at airport at Hilton or Sheraton and then go to town for dinner, but I’m open to suggestions.

We have not been to Frankfurt. If the weather is rotten, we would probably not go to town, as we won’t have winter clothes.

What would you do?

Thanks!

I would stay at the airport because it will be dark outside when you arrive until you depart. Summer would be a different discussion.

Budget more time in the morning for your return flight. Don't be surprised that elevators don't work and security check staff don't know what they are doing.

I was at FRA three times this year and really dislike my experience. Together with Heathrow, FRA is notorious for being the biggest and most chaotic air hub in Europe.

We are fond of the Hilton Garden Inn at FRA -- easy walk to the gates! For dinner, we have gone to the little market at the foot of the hotel and bought a roasted chicken, plus sodas and snacks. By the last night, eating in sounds very good.

I’m an urban guy, but I agree that downtown should be written off, on this schedule. Concentrate on getting a quiet room at a place that, alas, does not have to be accountable to its one-time visitors. (That’s a general gripe, not specific to FRA.) Make sure you check-in for the flight 3 hours before departure.

Thanks for the quick and helpful responses. Alas, it will be January. I think we’ll stay at the airport and figure out dinner when we get there, depending on our energy levels and timeliness of the incoming flight. Thanks for the warning about extra time in the morning. We tend to be early arrivers.

Little time I know, but for dinner go to Sachsenhausen for green sauce and Apfelwein. Good public transportation in Frankfurt. Wear what you can to keep warm on the way. Taxi is always an option. You can sleep on the plane. https://www.eichkatzerl.de/
