Frankfurt Layover

We had a similar layover in February. It was plenty of time.

If the flight leaves on time, theoretically I would say you have enough time. When we have flown into Frankfurt from Dulles, we had to exit the plane and get on a bus to the terminal, so that will take some time.

If you have booked with both flights on the one booking you will be fine.
The airline has to get you to your final stop.

Update: It wasn't!

Our plane from DC actually arrived in Frankfurt early, so our connection was over 2 hours. However, the line at passport entry was out of control--it appeared that the shiny new kiosks were not working. We asked if there was an expedited line for people on tight connections. Nope! We were in line with members of a tour group that had longer connection times. They were super-nice and let us cut in front of them. But it still wasn't enough. After the entry line, we had to go to another line to scan our boarding passes. And then we had to go through screening again (despite this all being on a single ticket). Then we ran to the gate. Got to the gate about ten minutes before departure time, but the plane was already gone (though, according to flightaware, it ended up just sitting on the runway and ultimately departed 30 minutes late). Others were trying to make the same connection. I was surprised that they didn't hold the plane, given that they knew we (and others) were coming.

So we had to go to the Lufthansa customer service (oxymoron) desk to get rebooked. We genuinely tried being nice--after all, nothing that the customer service rep could do. But she was downright hostile. She immediately said, "there are no other flights today. Is there somewhere else you can go?" Which, if you think about it for more than 3 seconds, is kind of the dumbest question ever. We were traveling and--like all travelers--had travel plans booked. Was I going to say, "how about Beijing?" Anyway, I pulled out my phone and showed her three other star alliance flights that day. She said she couldn't book those because I arrived on a partner airline (United), so I'd have to call United. So I called United. But I'd booked with air canada points so United couldn't help so I had to call Air Canada. Air Canada was helpful, at least, and got us on a flight connecting through Warsaw that arrived late that night. So we lost that first day in Krakow, but at least got in so we wouldn't lose any of the next day traveling.

In sum, not a fan of Lufthansa or the Frankfurt experience. I'd recommend having at least 3 hours for connections right now.

I do hate flying. But the traveling is always worth it.

Though I do HIGHLY recommend the apple strudel at Hausmann's at the airport, which almost--ALMOST--made the unanticipated extra 9 hours at the airport worthwhile.

Is there somewhere else you can go?

I traveled extensively during my career and in my experience this is actually a great question and is usually not asked by the airline agent. Why? Let me give you an example. Years ago I was taking my family to Disney World. Our original flight to Orlando was cancelled and we were looking at an 8 hour wait for another flight. So I asked about the next flight to Tampa. The agent looked at me like "why?" Well, Orlando and Tampa airports are roughly the same distance from Disneyland. We were on the next flight to Tampa an arrived about the same time as our original Orlando flight.

I’m not a huge Frankfurt airport fan and always allow at least three hours if I need to transit it. For me, it’s always been security that was the nightmare.
