Frankfurt layover

Hi,

My husband and I will have a 9 hour layover in Frankfurt in April. We will be flying direct from Seattle to Frankfurt and then a connecting flight to Thessaloniki. I would like to do some exploring in Frankfurt, but have some concerns about the process of going back through the airport to catch the last flight. Is it a fairly simple process, just have to go through security with our passports? Do we need the Schengen travel visa or transit visa? We will be in Greece for a just under a month, not sure if that changes anything?
Any input or advice is appreciated.

Thank you!

Hopefully your flights are all on one ticket and your bags checked all the way thru to Greece so you don’t have to deal with your luggage. Yes, you have to go back thru security when you leave the airport. I have not seen the date that the visa’s are going to be required just mid 2025. Maybe someone else has that info…..

Yes, we are one ticket, the airline will transfer checked bags. I did some research as to terminal 1 and locating the train station. We will use the secured bag lockers as close to our departure gate as possible to make it easier. We have traveled to Greece before, but never with a long layover and we never left the airports. I see that there is a 30 minute train to Romerberg. I think that area would give us a lot to do fill up the layover. Another question though, is there anything we need to present to customs/immigration when leaving or going back through the airport?

I recommend recovering in a day spa or public pool in Wiesbaden (or another nearby spa town). If you go to the adults-only section, you don't even need a swimsuit.

I assume you are American citizens with American passports. You are going to Greece, a Schengen country (as is Germany) so you will go through immigration (passport control) on arrival in Germany, regardless. If you go out of the airport, you will have to come back in through security, but not through any check for Schengen. I don't know how far you plan to go beyond the S-Bahn stations in Frankurt, but from most Frankfurt S8/S9 stations (e.g., Frankfurt Hbf, Kobstablerwache, etc,), it's only about 15 ±3 minutes back to the airport from those stations, maybe a little longer if you go to a closer U-Bahn station.

Back at the airport you will still have to go through security to get to your gate for Greece.

We did that with a 7-hour layover, did a short walk around, and had a bratwurst and bier at a fair near Dom/Römer. What a way to begin our journey. We invited my wife's seatmate for the trip into Frankfurt on a regional ticket for up to 5 persons. She had a 10-hour layover.

There are no lockers at the airport, you have to use the luggage storage facilities. Which airlines are you using? Google them to find the terminal you will be arriving and departing from. There is a luggage storage place in each terminal.

Go to the Regional train station which is located under terminal 1 and get a group day ticket to Frankfurt (21.40€) and take the S-8 or S-9 into the city. The aqua RMV machines switch into English. Get off at the 6th stop which is the Hauptwache. This puts you near many of the sites you might want to see, like the Römer, the Kaiserdom, the Karmeliter Cloister or the Jewish Holocaust Remembrance Wall, the Kleinmarkthalle.

If you here on a Tues, Thur. Fri. or Sat. there are lovely Farmers markets downtown to visit.

Just make sure to leave plenty of time to go through security when returning to the Frankfurt Airport. We were traveling business class, so were able to go through the "faster" line, which still took about an hour, as there was only one agent, and he opened and visually inspected each person's baggage. Perhaps it was an anomaly that day, as I have been traveling to Europe twice a year for the last 15 years, and I never had such a long wait at an airport security counter. The people who were not on the "express" line are probably still waiting to get through, lol!
