Frankfurt in May

Does anyone have any tips on safety/neighborhoods in/around Frankfurt? Specifically, since we’re looking at Airbnb, neighborhoods to avoid (2 women traveling)? Also, a posting under Berlin had some negative points about utilizing Airbnb, effects on local economy, etc. We want to be respectful of the countries we visit. Hotels with kitchenettes? We’re only looking for 4 nights, as we’re attending/staying at a major hotel at the end of our trip. Won’t have a car, so access to public transportation key; hoping to do some day trips somewhere. Any tips/ideas welcome!

There are a lot of hotels with kitchenettes or apts. for short time rent. Adina Apts. is one that is near the Alt Stadt and the river. If you use www.hrs.com you can use a filter to find the hotels that offer kitchens, etc. Then you can book with them directly.

Look on websites offering Ferien Wohnungen (vacation apts.) or check out Frankfurt.de to find them. I would be wary of booking with Airbnb as one never knows when it will go bust or be declared illegal in a city.

The RLD is a 2x3 block area in the city and unless you are following Ricks walking tour in Frankfurt (don't do it, as he leaves out some of the best stuff in Frankfurt), you will never see it. Other than that, there aren't unsafe areas in Frankfurt. I am a 64-year-old woman and have no qualms about walking anywhere here, at any time of the day or night.

Events in May in Frankfurt and surrounding towns.

1-3.05 Roman Markt, Saalburg
1-3.05 Plant Market, Hessen Park Open Air Museum
3.05 Antique Market, Königstein
8-16.05 Green Sauce Festival, Frankfurt Roßmarkt & Hauptwache
20-29.05 Fressgasse Fest, Frankfurt

May is winefest time! It's a really good time to be in the area between Mainz and Wurzburg. Check out the small to medium sized towns, or get a book on the local wineries and then check their websites. Most run the latter half of the week. That's mostly white wine area.

I was impressed with Duval Apartments, which is on the north bank of the Main opposite the Stadel Museum, between the Hauptbahnhof and the Altstadt. All rooms have kitchens. There is a tram stop quite close to the Apartments, and you're in reasonable walking distance of both the Hauptbahnhof and the Willy-Brandt-Platz U-Bahn station.
