Hi all, I am going to the Netherlands in December. My father was born in Aschaffenburg and I really want to see Heidelberg - is it practical/possible to book 4 nights in Frankfurt and take day trips to the other cities? I have not been to Germany before

It is easy to get to both Heidelberg and Aschaffenburg from Frankfurt. Both are about an hours train ride.
Other towns to visit depending on your interests and dates of travel (because of the smaller Christmas markets), might be Büdingen, Gelnhausen, Idstein, Marburg, Limburg, Eltville, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Bad Homburg, or Seligenstadt.
Do leave some time to do some sightseeing in Frankfurt too, as there is a lot to see here.

Yes there is good rail service between Netherlands and Frankfurt area and in Germany in general
