We are 4 seniors returning from a river cruise next June. We are planning a Rheinland-Pfalz ticket + Lux day pass to Mainz and spending the night in Mainz. Next morning 2 of us are proceeding straight to the Frankfurt airport, and the other 2 are planning a day in Frankfurt before returning to the airport for an evening flight home. Can we purchase a Frankfurt all-day group ticket with airport at the station in Mainz which allows travel from Mainz to Frankfurt and back to the airport? Or do we buy individual tickets from Mainz to Frankfurt airport; and then the group ticket from the airport to Frankfurt and back?

The "Gruppentageskarte 5 Personen" at price level 5 is €28.30 and valid all day long for your group of 4 adults as long as you are all traveling together on the same train between Mainz and Frankfurt airport. (You would not be able to leave Mainz at separate times on separate trains since you have only one ticket.) But the two who are NOT getting off at the airport can continue to use the ticket to reach Frankfurt proper and to return later to the airport.

A lot depends on whether the two who are going into Frankfurt for the day are willing to leave Mainz with the two who are flying out first. Are they?
If you all leave Mainz together, the group ticket will be the cheapest overall, but split evenly 4 ways, it is about 7,10€ each. Since the single trip ticket from Mainz to FRA is only 4,80€, the people going just to FRA might not (probably not) want to split it evenly.
