Frankfurt airport train question

Hi, we’re flying into Frankfurt tomorrow and taking train to Berlin. I have ICE non-changeable ticket booked going from the airport to the main Frankfurt station and on to Berlin. I booked the tickets to allow plenty of time to clear EES but we have a very short connection at the main station.

My question: if we clear immigration faster, can we take an earlier S train (buying the ticket) to the main station, forfeiting the first leg of my booked ticket, in order to have more time for connection? Are the S trains easy? This won’t cause me to lose my seats on the second leg of my ICE ticket?

Thank you!

You don't have to do or pay anything, the local connection part of Sparpreis/Saver ticket is flexible.

from the DB website english pages:

*If you have a (super) saver fare ticket, you can only travel on the service indicated on the ticket. Offers are available for ICE/IC/EC connections within Germany.
You can use local transport (e.g. RE, RB, IRE and S-Bahn or non-DB trains) to get to/from a long-distance station if you include them in your booking. You are not restricted to travelling on a specific train when using local rail services. However, your journey must be completed by 10:00 am the following day
.*

The booking system, like most others, is biased to giving the overall fastest intinery which is why it offers short connections, clearly if you used a later S-Bahn and missed the ICE they would hold it against you but going earlier to avoid a rush is fine. In fact you can also use the slightly better RE trains if one turns up first. I think all trains to the Hauptbahnhof go from track 1 at Regionalbhf - they don't stop long so don't wait for instructions. Note that virutally all stations in the Frankfurt area have names begining Frankfurt, you need Hauptbahnhof (abbreviation Hbf) . Most S-Bahn trains continue beyond Hbf and will show either Hanau or Offenbach on the front

Be aware that there are two stations at the airport, for S-Bahn you need the Regionalbahnhof which is under the main drop off/pick up road outside Terminal 1, entrances are marked with circular green signs with a white S. Do not go on the hike down the corridor to the Fernbahnhof on the other side of the autobahn!

the short answer is you can use any earlier S-Bahn or RE train into the Hauptbahnhof at no extra cost and without any formality.

the long answer is stuck in the system and may appear later......

Use any earlier S- or other regional train to the main station. You do NOT need to buy a new ticket for FRA airport > Frankfut Hbf since you have already ticketed this travel segment. Just show your original ticket if asked. This will not impact your ticket or reservation for the ICE train to Berlin.

The S-Bahn runs every five minutes and should be fairly easy. In Frankfurt main station, you need to climb a floor, but the path is extremely obvious. Your reservations are NOT forfeited if you skip a part of the journey.

Addendum: Depending on your specific ticket, the use of SBahn as an alternative might already be included. The restriction is (presumably, but I might be outdated here) only relevant for High Speed trains.

That being said, it is also fairly cheap.

The S-8 and S-9 run every 15 min. and there are also regional trains. Take any train leaving from platform 1, to go to the city and the Hauptbahnhof. Regional trains will come in upstairs in the main part of the station and the S-bahns come in downstairs.
The Regional station is located under Terminal 1. Hopefully your flight arrives here too. If not, you will have to take the Skytrain to Terminal 1.

The S-bahns take about about 11 min. to get to the city, or 4 stops. The Regional trains tend not to stop anywhere on the way to the city.

You do NOT need to buy a new ticket for FRA airport > Frankfut Hbf since you have already ticketed this travel segment.

Caution: If the ticket from the airport to the main station is an Sparpreis ICE ticket, i.e. valid only for a specific train (i.e., the ticket specifies train numbers like “ICE 621 / ICE 930”), it is NOT valid on an alternative local train, because in this case, DB does not reimburse the local carrier. This is completely different from the so-called “Vor-/Nachlauf” using a local train that you booked together with your ICE ticket.
Unfortunately, this is a trap that unsuspecting travelers often fall into.

Tell us EXACTLY what your ticket says, train numbers and departure times for both trains. Then we can give you an informed answer.

"My question: if we clear immigration faster, can we take an earlier S train"

I assumed you meant "earlier than the scheduled S-train." Perhaps I assumed too much, not sure...

If you scheduled for an S-Train when you made your purchase, your ticket will probably not say "S-Train" - it will simply have "NV" up front, which is the abbreviation for "local transport", meaning you can take any S-train, Regional train, or public bus into Frankfurt.

If you scheduled an ICE from the airport into Frankfurt, then for that leg, there should be a train number with "ICE"
just before it.

If you scheduled an ICE from the airport into Frankfurt, then for that leg, there should be a train number with "ICE" just before it.

To give an example from my upcoming trip back from Boppard:

Einfache Fahrt Boppard Hbf Augsburg Hbf
Via: BIN *MZ *(F *MA/KA *PF) *S *(AA/UL) *A
Zugbindung ICE 517, 12:51 Uhr am 10.05.2026

The key point is the “Zugbindung” (train-specific) line. If that's on your ticket, you have to take the train listed (or buy a new S-Bahn ticket). I would take this very seriously, because if you're checked on the S-Bahn, it will cost you €60 per ticket.

Thank you, everyone, for your help! I knew you’d be able to answer my question!

Yes, I booked an entirely ICE super saver ticket because it was so much cheaper. I don’t mind paying a small price for a regional train or S train if I get through early for the peace of mind of not rushing for my connection. Now just wish me luck that travels go smoothly!

Usually the part from The airport to the main station will be on the S-Bahn, even if the rest is on ICE, but some connections are indeed ICE all the way.

If you have train binding on Airport - HB as well then you do indeed need a different ticket if you decide to take an earlier train.

A few notes:

  • Connections may appear short to you, but they are not. They are efficient. Railways will offer connections down to 1 minute, because a good railway will not waste your time. You will need maybe 3 minutes for this connection.
  • If you are traveling on an ICE from Airport to HB this train will probably be coming from somewhere else. It might be delayed. You will see that on the monitors If the delay looks like it will endanger your connection you can at your own discretion take another train, including an S-Bahn.
  • The train from Frankfurt to Berlin often comes from somewhere else as well (Basel or Munich). If the system shows it has an expected delay on arrival in Berlin of more than 20 minutes your train ticket has just become flexible. Take any train you want on the route to Berlin...

So install the DB app, and keep an eye on the train...

If you do want to take the S-Bahn to the main station but have an ICE ticket for that stretch you will indeed need another ticket. Skipping a leg on a ticket does not invalidate it, as the railways have no way to find out that you did not take a particular train.
