Frankfurt airport to Baden-Baden

Hi gang,

I have a ticket on Lufthansa from Budapest into Frankfurt airport (arriving 12:25pm on a Saturday). I would then take the train to Baden-Baden.

There is a 12:53pm train. Is that enough time to make it from the gate?
It has 2 changes, which makes it less than ideal.
However, the 1:53 train (1 stop) gets in at 3:25, and I am attending a 5pm concert, so that cuts it a bit close.

I may try and catch an earlier flight out of Budapest.

Should I try and buy my train tickets ahead of time (knowing that I may need to be flexible) or go ahead and buy them online now?

Without my looking it up (I will shortly) I don't know if the 12:53 train leaves from the Fernbahnhof or the Regionalbahnhof. Also, I don't know if your flight is coming into Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. Since you are coming from Hungary, which is (I think) in Schengen, you will not have to go through immigration. If you are coming into Terminal 1 and your flight is on time, 28 minutes is probably just barely enough time to get to the regional bahnhof, but if you are coming into Terminal 2, or going to the Fernbahnhof, I don't think you can do it. It might depend also on how far back you are in the aircraft and how long it takes you to deplane.

OK, I see a Lufthansa flight from Budapest arriving at Terminal 1 at 12:25. That's good, but the train is an ICE leaving from the Fernbahnhof. That's not good. You probably won't make that train even if the flight is on time.

If you get a discounted advance purchase ticket, and the plane is late, you can still apply what you paid for the ticket, less 17,50€ towards a full price ticket. Still, I wouldn't advise anyone who depends on aircraft arrival time reliability to use a specific train ticket.

Thanks Lee.
That could be a tight connection.

Do you know of private drivers who could take me from the airport to Baden-Baden?

Can we ask what the event is and where?
The way I see it, if you take the 13:53, you will be at Baden-Baden Bahnhof at 15:25, stash your stuff in a locker and grab a taxi to the concert. You should be there at 16:00, plenty of time for a 17:00 concert.
Need to gussy up? Do it on the train.
That train does have a 6 minute connection in Karlsruhe, so you need to hustle.

You know, there is an airport, FKB, just south of Baden-Baden. Looks like there is only one connection on Saturdays from Budapest, 6:30 to 10:05, Air Berlin via Templehof.

Todd, "Do you know of private drivers who could take me from the airport to Baden-Baden?" - A train will almost certainly be quicker than driving. http://www.viamichelin.com reckons 2 hours for 165 Km, plus traffic delays.
I see a 13:51 (not 13:53) requires change at Mannheim, arrive Baden-Baden at 15:25. There is more than one stop involved, between Mannheim and Baden-Baden it also stops at Karlsruhe.
Note Baden-Baden station is some distance from the town (about 4 Km). A taxi ride would be required. But you should still arrive around 18:00, plenty of time.

Thanks for all of the helpful replies everyone.

I realized that the concert is on Sunday (not Saturday!), so I will have plenty of time to get to Baden Baden that Saturday from Frankfurt airport without having to worry about tight schedules.

I was going to point that out when you finally divulged what concert you were going to. Rene Pape singing Wotan in Die Walkuere.

Hi Sam,

That's the one!

Should I try and get rail tickets now? I'm arriving on that flight from Budapest on Saturday, and then leaving BB on Monday to Frankfurt airport

I would not bother with advance tickets from the airport, since you are only saving 16 EUR, and there is always a risk that the flight could be delayed. You could save a few EUR buying the return to Frankfurt airport, since that will be a sure thing.
