Frankfurt airport -long layover

We have an 11 hour layover on our way to South Africa. We don't have enought frequent flyer miles to be able to get into the nice airline lounges. Are there showers that are available to everyone? I think it would help me be able to not feel grungy. Are there any other tips people have for the Frankfurt airport?? Thanks

Yes, they have showers, 6 euro.

I'd say take advantage of the situation and go into Frankfurt for a while. It is only about 15 minutes on the S-bahn. You can store carry-on luggage at the airport and do the town. You will have your boarding pass, so it is just a matter of getting back to the airport with enough time to collect the bags, get through security and walk to the gate.

You have plenty of time to leave your bags and go into Frankfurt and take a walking tour. You wouldn't believe that there is so much to see. I certainly didn't and was really pleasantly surprised.

Use somebody like Frankfurt on Foot (the link is to their number one rating on TripAdvisor) who have both group tours every morning and private and small group tours on reservation.

I'd have thought that if you allow an hour to clear the airport, 15 minutes to get to Frankfurt by frequent inexpensive train, a couple of hours on a tour, 90 minutes for a meal, and 15 minutes back, then 3 hours for check in for the South Africa flight (lucky you) you will still have around 3 hours to stroll around and return to sights or see new ones. Maybe two meals. Try out the Frankfurt Green Sauce.
