We are traveling by train from Beaune, France to Mürren, Switzerland this summer and would like to visit another place for 3 nights along way. Perhaps Germany, although we are open to other ideas. (We have already been to Colmar.) We are considering Freiburg or Staufen. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Gengenbach, (south east of Strasbourg, FR - which is also worth seeing if you have not)
Gutach and other nearby Black Forest villages and the Vogtsbauernhof
Thanks, Russ. I'll look into Gengenbach. Gutach, according to Bavarian Ben, is not accessible by train and we will not have a car. I want to visit Vogtsbauernhof although it looks like a bit of a trek using public transportation.

No problem, this is old information. As of 2014 there's been train service to the front door of the Vogtsbauernhof; Gengenbach to the Gutach Vogtsbauernhof station can be done by train in 27 minutes.

The Gutach roofs Russ kindly provided remind me of Aarau, Switzerland, which you might consider, along with Stein am Rhine. You didn't say if you would consider a major city with important museums, like Basel. Besancon, France especially the citadel, is almost as nice as Freiburg, Germany. If you are willing to have an objective other than "yet another fachwerk or medieval town center" (not slamming you, that applies to me too...) how about the Roman site Augusta Raurica, or Le Corbusier's chapel in Ronchamp, France? Very different from you other old towns would be Perouges, France.
Thank you, Russ and Tim. I'm going to follow through and look at your suggestions.
