FRA to Ramstein Air Base over a few days.

I had this question at https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/general-europe/overcrowding-back-door-finds but decided that it was a bit off topic, even though I am looking for “backdoor” towns and villages (with KFC’s of course).

Ms Jo or whomever, if I were to drive from FRA to Ramstein Air Base and if I were to spend a few days doing it …. What’s the route to visit some less visited but worth the effort villages and towns; and where should I stop for the night. Maybe 2 nights on the way.

I know I will have to go visit my son at least once before the year is out. Ohhhh, so a when would be good too. Anything special going on during a particular date mid-Summer to early Fall?

Well, I have never been to Ramstein, nor Kaiserslautern, though I do want to go visit their Kindergraves, as I care for the same sort of cemetery site in Frankfurt.
So, unfortunately, not the right person to ask.

Loads of winefests in that region in September, The Wine Festival of the Middle Mosel in Bernkastel-Kues about the first weeken in September, and then the Bad Durkheim Wurtzfest two weekends in September.

In mid August, Frankfurt has an apple wine festival.

as you arrive, KL has an excellent Japanese Garden (tiny carpark up the hill, or find down at ground level). I've spent over 2 hours there one day.

Thats disapointing Ms. Jo you are one of the sources on Germany that I trust. The visits are usually just hop in the car at the airport and drive straight through about 1:45 to the base. Would be nice to spend a night or two on the way.

Paul, Bernkastel-Kues does look beautiful, and a couple of castles on the way. Easily a late night arrival, then the next day and night before heading south.

Apples in Frankfurt? But isnt Frankfurt a modern city full of skyscrapers? Sorry, Ms. Jo, just kidding. I do need to spend a night there on one of the trips. If you could recommend a good guide and a place to spend the night that would be helpful. Maybe get a morning flight to FRA, then do see the city, spend a night or two and make our way to Bernkastel-Kues (or somethng similar) visiting a castle along the way.

September woudl be idea as for the weather. But its also a big wine time here and late September I have to return to the US for a few days.

Nigel, Ive never cosidered KL, cause I dont have the foggiest what it is.

What’s the route to visit some less visited but worth the effort villages and towns;

One of several options, with a small detour to the south-east: FRA - Aschaffenburg (via the most unromantic Autobahn of southern Germany), then, following the river Main upstream, Miltenberg and Amorbach. From here, southwest into the Odenwald to Michelstadt. Continue south to the Neckar river: Eberbach - Hirschhorn. Bypass Heidelberg (not really a backdoor destination) and head to Speyer (has the most important Romanesque cathedral in Germany). From there to the south via Landau to Wissembourg in northern Alsace. The rest of the way to Ramstein you almost can walk.

sla019, facinating idea. Thank you

Ms Jo, thank you. I know how much time it takes to research a list like that. Your clients are fortunate and it settled I go for the European Elvis Festival, Bad Nauheim – 15-17.08. I hope Nauheim is extra bad that week! Seriously I guess I have some tools to work with. Much appreciated.

Kaiserslautern, also known as K-Town, the town nearest Ramstein. Immediately next to Ramstein to the south and east.

In between FRA and Ramstein: ALZEY is an old-world wine town I remember as "backdoor" and pretty special. But it was pretty special many years ago and I can't feed you details at this point, nor do I have any bookmarked resources for you. Here's one possible resource if you want to look into it.

https://www.rheinhessen.de/en/alzey-2

To the north on the Nahe River is Bad Sobernheim and its open-air museum - quite an interesting place if you enjoy this sort of thing, as I do. I've never met or chatted anyone else who went there. Want to be the first?

Tim, I enjoyed your referenced long trip report. We may have been in the Lübeck area at the same time. I had planned to stop at the amber museum on my way to Binz auf Rügen, but it didn't work out.

I think it's really great that you ventured so far north. I hope you enjoyed Rügen. Truly fascinating (for me), from the famous white seaside resort architecture to the Nazi relic of Prora - a somewhat creepy building.
Until now, I've only ever been a day tripper on Rügen, since when I vacation up there, I either stay overnight in Stralsund or on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula (Ahrenshoop).

Alzey is a historic horse trading center from the middle ages, and not a bad place to spend a day. The Schloss, which is still lived in and not open to the public, is really something.

But I suggest Bad Kreuznach would be a better place to spend a night. It's also historic, has a good Roman museum, and the ruins of the old castle have a good gasthaus. Plus there's the caves used as air raid shelters in WWII. It does get a number of tourists, but rarely Americans.

Even better would be Meisenheim, where the old city wall still stands and which is much more attractive than Alzey. It's less than an hour from Ramstein. Meisenheim is known as a place where Germans go for romantic weekends. The Meisenheimer Hof is excellent, both for lodging and food, it's Michelin starred, and not inexpensive. There are a couple beer gardens that are much more reasonable.

In mid-September Bad Durkheim will host the worlds largest winefest. It's not "on the way" but it also is only an hour from the base. There will be numerous other winefests within the Pfalz, hundreds, and some are quite small. I have a link somewhere, I'll look when I get a chance.

If you want to travel down the Winestrasse I'll recommend either Freinsheim or Deidesheim, both medieval walled towns that are excellent places to visit and very off the beaten path. Deidesheim is more expensive; it's basically a German version of what Callistoga was to Napa Valley 40 years ago.

Note you will need a visitors pass to access the base, and your son will need to be there with you to sign you in. You need to do this at the West Gate, on the right as you approach the gate. You will need vehicle papers and passport also.

I know the routine at Ramstein. I've been there and other bases many times. This is an attempt to make the visit more interesting this time. But thanks for the rest.
