(FRA) 21 hour layover - suggestions

Hi RS forum,

This is our first time visiting Germany. We have a 21 layover in Frankfurt. I was looking for suggestion on how to best use this time. I've been doing lots of research and now getting analysis paralysis. Seems during our layover there's a large tradeshow going on, which explains why hotel price are through the roof.

Here's our layover.
- Arrive Mon, 06/10 @ 4:00pm.
- Depart Tues, 06/11 @ 1:00pm

Seems there's other towns nearby worth visiting but wanted to get your feedback.

Thanks,
Joe

If also the close towns are too expensive, have a look at Wiesbaden or Darmstadt.
Last one is also easy to reach by shuttle bus AirLiner which connects airport bus terminal with center of Darmstadt.

Mainz is as close as downtown Frankfurt and it's a straight shot on the train. You can catch the train right by the airport. If you get a place by the Mainz train station you can just walk over, if you want a nice place a little further out stay at the Hyatt Regency. it's right on the river, and on the edge of the old city so you have all kinds of shopping and restaurants right there plus a great walk along the river.

Agree with suggestions for Mainz. You can expore the area around the Markt and have dinner on Monday. Then get about an hour to visit the Guttenberg Museum on Tuesday AM.

Generally, I have found that the Frankfurt occupancy rate doesn't have much impact on Mainz's hotel prices. But that my depend on the specific fair, time of year, etc.

This thread is very timely for us, so I'm grateful! We, too, will have an approximate one day layover in Frankfurt. Based on this thread, we will look to stay in Mainz. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on hotels in Mainz. We know virtually nothing about that area. Thank you!

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I've started the search in Mainz for hotel, checking out the Hyatt and others in that area. Now using google street to get a feel for the area, also watching YT to find places to visit.

Thanks again.

In February I stayed at the Mercure Hotel Mainz City Center. Part of the Accor chain (Accor brands have had very consistent hotel experiences for me) and I think it's a good value. Short walk from train station. About 10-15 minutes to Markt area.
