Four nights in Munich in January

A short solo trip mostly to see an opera. I arrive on a Friday at around noon and will take the train to the old town where I’m staying near the opera house. Figured I’d drop my bag at the hotel and see something before check-in time and then do something else to stay up. Saturday is unplanned. Sunday is the Opera matinee at 4. Monday is open and fly back Tuesday.

I’ve been to Neuschwanstein and Linderhof. In Munich I remember seeing the Residenz and the Olympic Park. Looking for suggestions for a day trip for Saturday or Monday and recommendations for city sights or experiences. Thanks.

I spent 5 nights in Munich. I took a day trip to the preserved nazi concentration camp Dachau; I saw about a third of the Residenz museum but then had a problem with my guts and skipped ahead to the men's room and they wouldn't let me continue my audio-guide tour where I left off - they only let you see the place on a one-way path and they won't let you go backwards or re-enter. The Bavarian national museum had some nice objects that must have taken a lot of skill to make; Schloss Nymphenberg also only lets you go through the part with the decorative rooms on a one way-path with no re-entry but the place is much smaller than the residenz museum; the old wheeled vehicles pulled by horses were nice to see too. I didn't take any other long-distance day trip from Munich.

The Residence is fantastic, and it should be open on Sunday early enough that you can do that before the Opera. It's right next door.

The Deutsches Museum is huge, and you can easily spend a day there.

If you are interested in art the Alte and Neue Pinakothek's are among the great museums of Europe.

If you're into hunting and fishing, there's a museum for that.

If you just want to take it easy and relax with good food and a drink in a nice warm place, go to Therme Erding. Take your swimsuit. (It's really nice when it's snowing.)

Ask the concierge about local concerts or jazz cellars. There's almost always something going on as Munich has a lot of music students. In the summer they play in the streets. In winter they play the bars and churches.

The Glockenspiel plays the full concert at 1100 each day. Sundays are the best day to walk without crowds and get your pictures.

If you must get out of town, consider Augsburg, Nuremberg, or Regensburg as short, direct, train rides to very worthwhile cities.

Leonard, I’ll be staying at Hotel am der Oper. I wanted a place convenient to the venue.

BMW Welt and Museum. Even if you’re not into cars, Welt has some cool interactive experiences.

For 5 euros you can climb the St Peter’s Church tower. 300 steps of heart-pounding fun.
