I hope this isn’t behind a paywall. Smithsonian is prett;y generous with their online articles.
There are 6 similar— if unused—Flak Towers in Vienna
and another in Berlin.
We spent a week in Vienna near one of those. Its looming dark presence was a blot on our time there. There was talk of turning it into an art museum, butvI don’t know what has become of that.
If you want to see the U-Boat ( sub) pens, I suggest those in France. They are located in Lorient. No way were they to be demolished since the French readily took them over.
Likewise with Hitler's HQ in France at Margival very close to Soissons. The entire complex was taken by the French Army for several years after the war. Now the site is open for prearranged guided touring, presumably in English as well and not only in French.
When I visited Soissons as a day trip from Paris Nord from last summer, I went not to see Margival , arrange that with Tourist Office,
but to check out and explore the German and French sites connected with WW1. I found the city's old architecture very revealing and interesting.
What a sad title to such a cool topic. It's not just a hotel. It's a public rooftop garden, restaurants, and a way of making an ugly scar in our city greener still.
And the responses show people didn't read about it. Which is sad because it is SUCH a cool project. I hope people take the time to read up on it and especially to look at the before and after pictures. This is such a great city, always rebuilding and reinventing itself.
I thought referring to the hotel part might encourage people to go and stay there, to truly appreciate it.
One would hope, but apparently people don't even read the article!
But you're right, it is really cool!
