Flying into one city and out of another

Is it possible to fly for example Seattle to Frankfurt and onto Milano and then return from Frankfurt?
I would drive from Milano back to Frankfurt.
Does anyone have experience doing this. I would really like to take the Lufthansa Business class flight to and from.

Yes it is possible. Purchasing an open jaw ticket into one city and out of another is very common. Is there a specific concern you have about this?

I think what you want to do is fly to Milano and back from Frankfurt. This is called "open jaw" and is common.
The issue you may have is doing a one-way car hire from Milano to Frankfurt will incur a surcharge for international one-way hire. You need to get a quote for the car car before you fix on this plan. Using trains for part of the trip could solve this problem.

frank,

Yes, as the others have mentioned, what you've suggested is called "open jaw flights". Frankfurt is a major hub and you'll likely be able to find direct flights from Seattle (but I haven't checked), and the segment to Milano / MXP will be via one of the regional carriers.

As Chris F. mentioned, it would be a good idea to check the car rental provisions from Italy to Frankfurt, as most rental firms charge a substantial fee for renting in one country and dropping in another. As mentioned, you might consider using trains for part (or all) of the trip back to Frankfurt. Rail travel in Germany is very easy and quick, and often much faster than by car.

Not to mention that to pass through Switzerland or Austria, you will need to buy a vignette (toll sticker) to use any of the superhighways.

When you book tickets through Lufthansa, you might need to follow a link for "multi-city itinerary" or "advanced request" but then can easily book the open-jaw flight plan and costs should not be much different from a regular roundtrip ticket.

Many thanks to everyone. I have taken the advice given and booked my Business class ticket Seattle Frankfurt Milano returning from Frankfurt on Luftahansa via their 747 400 with new lay flat seats (I was told).

I was well aware of the extra toll charges in Switzerland and the extra drop fees for renting a car to drop in another country. I will actually be traveling back to Frankfurt with some friends who will meet me in Modena Italy.
Last year we rented a French car at Milan Malpensa to drop in Paris which cut the fees substantially.
This French plated car caused us some problems with scammers in Turin who thought we were Tourist and could be easy prey.
My iPhone camera saved the day. "Why are you taking my photo" "who are you" and in my best Clint Eastwood voice I said,
"You don't want to know" and they scrambled off like cockroaches in bright light, not to be seen again.
