Fly To luxembourg ?

After some search i've seen good price on flight to Luxembourg. (yul -Lux layover Paris) and Lux-Yul (layover Zurich) would cost me 250$ less by ticket (so around 1000$ less) than going into Frankfurt or Munich. Anyone have advices about this ?

Where are you trying to get to in Germany? Luxembourg is good if you are heading for the Mosel or the Mittelrhein, other spots in Germany will be a long and relatively slow (but scenic) rail journey.

I,m not 100% decided yet. We are a family of four (2 adults and 2 young kids) and we have 22-25 days. Our inti8al plan include stays at 4-5 places (Black forest , Munich, Nuremberg, Berlin and Frankfurt) and day trips from those places.

It depends on your destinations in Germany. In your other thread, you said this:
"We are looking for a mix of cities, small places, mountain, architecture, history and fun for kids." And you mention Munich, Nuremberg, Dresden and Berlin.

No small places there... but the good thing about LUX is that some excellent "small places" are just across the Luxembourg border and on your way to those other destinations. Spend 3 days in the Rhine/Mosel region if you can (medieval castles, old-world villages, river cruises, fun.)

Trier (Roman history, Germany's oldest city)
Cochem (Reichsburg Castle, falconry show, old-world half-timbered buildings, waterpark, chairlift ride; Burg Eltz nearby)
Middle Rhine Valley (river cruises, never-destroyed Marksburg Castle, Bacharach, and more.

Off course I've mentioned big places, but we can rent a place near those big town without being in the town itself. The idea is also to make daytrip around those places.

What i'm asking myself now is if flying to Luxembourg is a good/pratical idea. I'll have to make an itiniary based on a flight there.

I found it perfectly practical on a recent trip. I'm sure you can make an itinerary based on LUX alone. But... I would also CHECK on an open-jaws flight into LUX and out of Berlin or Munich - or vice versa. Don't just assume it will be too expensive.

If you use LUX at all, I'm suggesting that you DROP the Black Forest in favor of the Rhine/Mosel region instead. You get half-timbered towns and delicious scenery, but also more to see and do and less ground travel.

thanks for that opinion Russ !

I've done some quick search and an open jaw (with Berlin or Munich) is really more expensive. I have no problem to drop Black forest region. Could you show me or give me a quick idea of a good itiniary ? Like i've said, the main problem is the return to Luxembourg since I should be in eastern part of germany at the end of the trip.

Don't know your travel dates or # of days in each place, but by train here are the travel times between the destinations I think you're considering.

Luxembourg - Boppard (Rhine) (3 hours)
Boppard - Berlin (6 hours)
Berlin - Dresden (2-2.5 hours)
Dresden - Nuremberg (4.5 hours)
Nuremberg - Munich (1-1.5 hours)
Munich - LUX (6.5 hours)

LONG TRAIN JOURNEYS: If you have to start out late in the afternoon from somewhere, it is possible (I've done this at times) with individual tickets to schedule an 8-12-hour (or longer) layover on the route somewhere for overnight (I've done LUX-Nuremberg with a hotel stopover in Frankfurt, for example.)

Russ: I would be interested to know the "or longer" part of your question. In August we tried to book a free overnight stopover in Frankfurt going Munich to Frankfurt airport but the layover time, 15 hours, was too long.

Tom_MN:

Saver fares for Luxembourg - Nuremberg (my example above) are available for 15 or 18-hour stopovers (the two variables I just tested for a date in February.)

Were you perhaps attempting to arrive at FRA AFTER 10 am? Long stopovers like 15-18 hours for Munich - Frankfurt - FRA are possible, but there is normally a 10 am. final arrival deadline when booking DOMESTIC fares and when arriving on "Day 2."

Russ,

I love your stopover concept. Do you think it's practical between Berlin and Garmisch (or Mittenwald) to have a stopover in Bamberg and then continue on in say the afternoon next day to Garmisch?

Example:
Leave Berlin 8am-
Arrive Bamberg 12:30pm
Depart Bamberg nextday 2:00pm
Arrive Garmisch 5:30pm.

As I mentioned in another thread, planning Berlin for 4 days, Garmisch 3, & Munich 4.

Thank you!

adroit: You can schedule such a stopover as you've suggested on a full-fare ticket - but not in connection with a saver fare; that's a DOMESTIC trip, and like I said, arriving AFTER 10 am at your final destination precludes the sale of a saver fare ticket. The second leg of your trip is just too long - you'd have to leave Bamberg at around 5 am to reach Garmisch by 10.

Hi once again !

There's something else that showned up ! For 350 more than the return flight to Luxembourg we can have (Yul-Zurick-Lux) and22 days w later ( Lux-Zurich-Yul). That way we avoid on train leg of 6 hours (we still have to go from Munich To Lux but since we want to have 6-7 days in te Moselle region)....

The only thing that i'm asking myself is if it's agood idea to start our trip in Berlin. Maybe it will be the hilight of our trip and we do it right from the start. Would the rest ( Dresden, Nurmenberg, Munich, Salzbourg ans Moselle) will be boring after Berlin ?

I just wanted to note that Luxembourg is an interesting place to visit for a day or so on its own :)
