Flights booked..now what?

Hello everyone,
a while back I asked for ideas for a trip to Germany and Austria with my 80 year father and my brother. Well we finally booked our flights. So now we can really make our plan.

We fly into Munich on Saturday July 8 and leave on Monday July 17th. We were lucky to get business class seats that lay flat so we are hoping to sleep on the way over and we ready to have a leisurely dinner and a stroll around town on our first night.

We would like to book an apartment or house so we have places to prepare some meals ,and some down time for Dad to relax every other day or two.

We have been considering a few nights near Salzburg and a few nights near Mittenwald.

We will probably rent a car.

Must dos on the trip...

Arial car to the top of the alps.
Mozarts home and a concert.
Small village/s
Beer, pretzels and sausage. 😀
Time to chill and enjoy the little towns I love early morning walks when the towns are coming life.

So I would love to hear your suggestions. And if you have any for apartments that would be lovely.

On our last two trips to Germany we have stayed four +/- days in a BnB in Marktschellenberg (which is between Berchtesgaden and Salzburg) and really enjoyed our stay. If you ask, they will assign you a room with a balcony overlooking the mountains. From Marktschellenberg it is an easy day trip to the Konigsee, Eagle's Nest and/or Documentation Center in Berchtesgaden (Obersalzberg), also to Salzburg and Hallstatt.

When in Mittenwald there are many pretty towns, churches, abbeys, palaces and mountains that would make easy day trips. My favorites are Linderhof, Wieskirche, Neuschwanstein. There is also a cable car (Tegelbergbahn) nearby. I have not taken this cable car but others say it is quite scenic. I do not have any good hotel/BnB recommendations for Mittenwald. We did stay in the place that Rick recommends in Pinswang, but it is closer to Fussen and Neuschwanstein than Mittenwald.

I would recommend renting a car when you are ready to leave Munich. Then when traveling from Marktschellenberg to Mittenwald I would drive the Alpenstrasse. It is a very scenic route, passing through many little towns and past small lakes.

June and July should be ideal. You probably will not need AC in the mountains but I would be inclined to book a hotel with AC in Munich just in case it is a hot summer.

How able is your Father? Old Europe involves walking (Mozart's home etc.). Many cafe and restaurant bathrooms are up or down stairs. What time of year?

Thanks for the reply. Dad is pretty fit. He can walk a good way, but needs some days off to recharge. We are going in July.

Thoughts are one or two locations with dry trips from those.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a good base town with LOTS of accommodations and dining options, and lots of things to see and do, IMO perhaps a good place to spend 4-5 days.

Gasthof Fraundorfer = traditional Bavarian food and music (Bavarian Evening)

G-P sightseeing

From MUC airport you can travel to G-P in 2.3 hours by train. After an international red-eye flight across 6-7 time zones, driving can be hazardous. It's EUR 32 for 3 adults to make this trip on the Werdenfels day pass. Just buy it at the airport from a ticket machine.

You can pick up a car in G-P if you want one but you probably won't need one. G-P has easy train connections for visiting Mittenwald and other nearby destinations (for example, Oberammergau and the Zugspitzbahn - for ascending Germany's tallest mountain peak.)

Staying in G-P means you receive a free visitors card, good for free local transport.

I would consider Berchtesgaden as a base for visiting Salzburg, the Koenigssee, and more. B'gaden also has a free visitors card for local transport.
