We will be flying to Munich at the end of May for what was going to be roughly two and a half days, but our flight has changed and we will now be arriving at 6:30 PM, which leaves much less time for us to explore the city on our first day. Our plan was to visit Salzburg on one of the full days, but now I am not sure if we would be able to see everything we want to see in Munich if we do a day trip there. Is Salzburg worth the time? Or are there any half day trips around Munich that would be scenic and interesting? TIA
I’d do Salzburg over Munich any time. But I’d want to do at least a day there.
And I’m just the opposite. Salzburg is such a tourist haven and overloaded on all of that SOM trinkets and tours. You’re already in Munich on short time so why waste even more time sitting on a train to/from Salzburg?
Consider calling your airline with your preferred alternative (look up your 2nd best itinerary online and have the flight numbers ready to tell the representative). You don't have to accept what's considered a major flight change. You have the option to ask for an acceptable alternative (at no additional cost) or to cancel outright.
I like both Salzburg and Munich but I would not want to do the rail roundtrip to spend part of a day in Salzburg. I like German trains but it is still lost time to make a long day trip. Plus Salzburg requires time on foot for me to enjoy the town: walk to Mirabell Gardens for views of the castle, walk through St. Peter's grave yard, walk along the Salzach River and walk up to the Castle. Too much to do for a short day trip.
I like both Augsburg and Landshut for shorter day trips. Landshut has a wonderful collection of decorative building facades and a nice walk up to its castle. Still, I think I would concentrate on Munich with only 2 days.
I guess the question is: Where else are you going on this trip? Maybe you cut cut short one of your other destinations.
Thanks all for your guidance. I think I will try calling the airline to see if they can get us on an earlier flight. Otherwise I think we will stay in Munich and try to get to Salzburg another time. It will be great no matter what!
